Earth Science Week Contests

The American Geosciences Institute organizes the Earth Science Week every year, where they conduct a variety of contests. For the 2021 Earth Science week contests, students can send videos, photographs, visual arts, and essays to participate. Individuals of all ages can participate in the “Water Is Part of Life Around the World” video contest and “Water as a Resource in My Community” Photography Contest. Kindergarten to 5 grades can participate in the “Water and Me” Visual Arts Contest. Also, 6 to 9 grades can participate in the “How We Understand, Use, and Protect Water” Essay Contest.

To let students and children express their creativity, various organizations and sponsors conduct innovative contests all around the world. Individuals can participate to meet other people with similar interests, have their entries judged and win a variety of prizes. Through video contests, people can improve their camera and editing skills. Moreover, the same can be said for photography and visual arts contests. Also, by entering essay contests, students can improve their writing and language skills.

Since October 1998, the American Geosciences Institute(AGI) has organized national and international events to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth sciences. They encourage stewardship of the earth through the Earth Science Week Contests and a variety of relevant themes. The AGI was founded in 1948 under a directive of the National Academy of Sciences to become a network of associations representing geoscientists with a diverse array of skills and knowledge of our planet. This Institute provides information services to geoscientists, serves as a voice of shared interests in a profession, plays a major role in strengthening geoscience education, and strives to increase public awareness of the vital role the geosciences play in society’s use of resources, resilience to natural hazards, and the health of the environment.
