The Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center announced the Youth Peace Poetry Contest conducted every year during National Poetry Month. This contest is meant to inspire youth to imagine a more peaceful world through writing. Anyone aged between eight and eighteen and living in Whatcom county can apply for this contest. The contest submissions must be sent on or before September 17, 2021, either online or via mail. Young individuals are invited to submit raps, poems, songs, stories, or any short creative writing piece for this contest. The themes could include listening, respect, peace, anti-bullying, friendship, social justice, etc. The poetry winners will receive the honor of reading their poems at a virtual poetry reading sponsored by Village Books. Also, they can have their poems recorded for the virtual Peace Builder Awards. Submitted poems will also be added in an e-book displayed on the website that will be shared publicly with the organizational supporters. Once public gathering is allowed, more opportunities can arise to share the winning poems with the community at local events.
Creative contests for children and anyone below the age of eighteen have always been popular since they encourage students to participate. These contests are an excellent way to display their creativity and uniqueness by submitting creative writing pieces. Students can participate for fun or receive cash prizes and/or honorable mentions in the sponsors’ events or websites. Competitions can push children out of their comfort zone so that they can write something that they might not have thought of on their own.
