United Nations Space4Youth Competition

Whether space fascinates you or you are just concerned about climate change and want to contribute to improving the situation, United Nations Space4Youth Competition is the right platform you need to show your talent and do something meaningful. This year, United Nations is hosting the 2021 edition of the Space4Youth Competition and eagerly looking forward to accepting applications from candidates belongs to a member state of the United Nations. Moreover, participants must be between 18 and 35 inclusive. The one aspect of this program that might interest you is that the program is open to not only students but young professionals. Only individuals can apply. Team submission will not be considered.

This wonderful competition is designed by United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs in collaboration with the Space Generation Advisory Council. Climate change is one of the leading issues of this time and has had a negative impact on our environment. These effects can be seen as melting glaciers, decreasing water level, drought, global warming and accelerated sea-level etc. United Nation believes that young people can play an essential role in finding innovative solutions for these issues and removing them. That is why United Nation has developed this program that will give the voice to and promote solutions and ideas presented by youth. What candidates need to do is compose a wonderful essay on “Space as a tool to foster climate mitigation and adaptation” and send it as entry to the organization. The purpose of the United Nations behind creating such a program is to encourage the youth to come with amazing ideas on how space can be used to tackle climate challenges.

United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs is committed to helping countries around the world and especially developing countries, access and leverage the benefits of space to accelerate sustainable development. Through the various activities, the organization works toward assisting countries in getting benefit from the space. This organization was formed on 13 December 1958 and currently operates its headquarters in Vienna, Austria. This office was established to assist and advise the ad hoc Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, and as a secretariat of COPUOS, United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs performs some duties such as aiding in implementing the five international treaties, five legal principles, and related general assembly resolutions.

Who May Be Eligible

Please meet the following requirements if you want to be a part of this program:

  • All students and young professionals from any Member State of the United Nations are welcome to apply;
  • All participants must be between 18 and 35, inclusive on 1 February 2021;
  • The competition is open to individuals – no team submission is allowed;
  • Competition organizers and judges are not eligible for the competition.

How to Apply

To enter this competition, all you need to do is complete an online application form that should be filled with correct and complete information since doing so will help judges make the right decision. Please start the application process as early as possible as it is a competition program, and all seats might get reserved before the time. So hurry up, please!

Supporting Documents

As a supporting document, applicants will need to write down an essay on “Space as a tool to foster climate mitigation and adaptation”. The essay must be forwarded to space4youth@un.org by the application deadline. Please follow the given rules while composing your essay:

  • An essay of no more than 1000 words, bibliography and abstract excluded.
  • An abstract of no more than 100 words

Benefits

Up to three candidates will be selected as winners, and they will get access to the following perks that the organization has to offer to its competition’s participants:

  • A trip to the United States to meet with representatives of the U.S. space sector and attend Adult Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama*
  • The UK Space Agency is pleased to organize an event with UK and US experts who will provide further feedback to the winners and, if feasible, support them in developing further their examples/ideas of space technologies for climate adaptation and mitigation.
  • Winning essays will be uploaded on the “Space for Youth” webpage of UNOOSA.
  • Selected candidates may be invited to participate in other events.
