Schlanger Ocean Drilling $30000 Fellowship

U.S. Science Support Program has brought an amazing program named “Schlanger Ocean Drilling Fellowship”. This fellowship grants merit-based awards to graduate students pursuing PhD to conduct research associated with the International Ocean Discovery Program. Applications for this program are open for the academic year of 2022-2023. Entries will be accepted for the same until December 20, 2021. All graduate students currently enrolled at U.S. institutions in full-time PhD programs are invited to send their entries. Approval of the research project by the student’s faculty advisor is required to start the application process.

This program will run for twelve months and offer $30,000 for the same time period to the selected fellows. The award amount will directly be sent to the home institution of fellows. The fund will be applied to only the research project, student stipend, tuition, benefits, and, if necessary, related travel. The use of funds is limited to these expenses. No part of the award amount should be utilized to cover institutional overhead, administrative costs, or permanent equipment. This program will offer consideration to all deserving candidates regardless of their race, religion, gender, creed, age, or national origin. Candidates must be able to start the fellowship from June or August (summer or fall semester) and work for one year. At the end of the fellowship, fellows will get to attend a meeting of the U.S. Advisory Committee for Scientific Ocean Drilling (USAC), where they can present the initial results of their research and take part in U.S. Science Support Program-related activities.

U.S. Science Support Program has been dedicated to supporting the involvement of the U.S. scientific community in the International Ocean Discovery Program, which is an international program of basic research in marine geosciences that discovers the Earth’s history and environment.

 Who is Eligible?

This program is designed for all graduate students currently enrolled at U.S. institutions in full-time PhD programs.

How to Apply?

Candidates are supposed to follow these steps to submit their entry successfully:

  • Step 1. Click on the Log In button at the top of the page. If you are new to the USSSP Application Portal, click on the Register button to set up an account.
  • Step 2. Once you register for an account, you’ll get an email to confirm your registration. (Make sure to check your spam box, just in case, and add us to your safe sender list.)
  • Step 3. Once you’ve logged in, click Programs at the top of the page to see a list of open USSSP-supported programs and start a new application or proposal. Click My Applications at the top of the page to work on in-progress submissions or view completed submissions. Once you’ve completed all required tasks, make sure to click the   SUBMIT   button!

Supporting Documents

1. Application Form: This form includes contact information for the applicant, plus the proposed project title, relevant DSDP, ODP or IODP expedition(s), geographic region, and scientific problem(s) of interest.

2. Recommendation Letters: Two letters of recommendation are required, one from the applicant’s faculty advisor and one from a second reference.

3. Research Proposal: Each research proposal must include a short title, an abstract (about 100 words), and a description of the proposed research (statement of the problem and hypothesis, background and relevance to previous work, discussion of methodology and procedure to be followed, explanation of new or unusual techniques, and discussion of expected results, significance, and application). Research proposals must not exceed four (4) pages of text, not including references or figures. Figures should be included separately at the end of the proposal and should be limited to two (2) pages.

4. Proposal Implementation Form: Applicants are asked to respond to specific questions about other funding sources, their research facilities, and the timeline of their proposed research.

5. Curriculum Vitae: CV should include relevant educational history (degrees and dates awarded); fellowships, scholarships, and awards received; academic honours received; society membership(s); employment experience (including any internships); and any authored or co-authored journal articles, abstracts, or other publications related to your proposed research.

6. Demographic Information Form: This information may be shared with reviewers. If you do not wish to disclose any of the information (excluding your name), please check the appropriate box.

Benefits

Fellowship will provide $30,000 to all qualified candidates for a 12-month period. The award amount will be made to the fellow’s home institution. The entire amount is to be applied to the research project, student stipend, tuition, benefits, and, if necessary, related travel. No part of the award is to be used to cover institutional overhead, administrative costs, or permanent equipment.
