Race and the Middle East/North Africa Dissertation PhD Fellowship

Graduate Center of the City University of New York is now hosting Race and the Middle East/North Africa Dissertation Fellowship program. This fellowship will be granted to students studying any field of humanities or social sciences. Candidates must be pursuing research on notions and practices of Race and radicalization in the Middle East/North Africa and among Middle Easterners/North Africans in the United States.

Candidates who will be selected for this program will get a chance to participate in activities associated with the Sawyer Seminar. These activities can be bi-weekly meetings, workshops, and a graduate course as well as present research. This is a wonderful opportunity that will not only provide students with financial support but help them develop academically and professionally. Who May Be Eligible

  • Applicants must be registered or on an approved leave of absence during the 2020-2021 academic year to be eligible to apply.
  • A student holding a five-year fellowship from the Graduate may not hold a dissertation fellowship concurrently with the five-year award. A student with a five-year award may apply. Still, if selected for a dissertation fellowship, the student will have to choose between the five-year fellowship funding and the dissertation fellowship funding. Students are eligible for a dissertation fellowship after completing their five-year fellowship.
  • A student with Graduate Center funding that is not part of a five-year award may apply for the dissertation fellowships but, if offered an award, the total funding may not exceed $50,000.
  • Dissertation Fellowships are intended for students who expect to complete the dissertation during 2021-2022 award year. Recipients need to be registered during the award year.
  • Candidates must have met human subjects research protection guidelines before commencing research with human subjects.

How to Apply

Applicants must send their application with required documents by the determined deadline. The application must include the following component:

  1. A cover sheet which includes name, CUNY first ID, doctoral-level, doctoral program, the title of the proposal, name of dissertation adviser who will write a letter of recommendation;
  2. Proposal
  3. 9-page project description
  4. 1-page selected bibliography
  5. Two-page curriculum vitae
  6. Current Graduate Center transcript
  7. One letter of reference to be submitted electronically by your adviser

Benefits

Each candidate will receive a fellowship of $25,000. In addition, the program will cover in-state tuition of all eligible applicants that will prove a great help for them. The award amount can be used to cover educational expenses.

Applicants can apply for the program before or on February 3, 2021. This is the final date, and after this date, your applications will not be accepted.
