The Ludo Frevel Crystallography Scholarship

Students who are passionate about Crystallography and its related studies are cordially invited by the International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD). Applicants who are willing to apply must be graduate students enrolled in a graduate degree program during the 2021 calendar year with a major in Crystal morphology, crystal structure analysis, etc.

The program is conducted in the honor of Ludo Frevel who was the first Dow scientist to have the title ‘Research Specialist’. The organization will also financially assist students with the same passion towards the Crystallography and let them achieve more success in their lives with the help of funds provided by the grant program.

The International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD) was founded in 1941 as the Joint Committee on Powder Diffraction Standards (JCPDS). It works to maintain a database of powder diffraction patterns, the Powder Diffraction File (PDF), including the d-spacings (related to the angle of diffraction) and relative intensities of observable diffraction peaks.

Who May Be Eligible?

The interested candidates must be following all the eligibility rules to be applicable:

  • Applicants must be a graduate student enrolled in a graduate degree program during the 2021 calendar year,
  • Students must have a major interest in the following:
  • Crystallography e.g. crystal structure analysis
  • Crystal morphology
  • Modulated structures
  • Correlation of atomic structure with physical properties
  • Systematic classification of crystal structures
  • Phase identification
  • Materials characterization
  • Students with a graduation date prior to 1 July 2021 are not eligible

How to Apply

Applications for the scholarship can be submitted via the ICDD website by following all the instructions. The students who require an alternate method can contact Stephanie Jennings – E-mail: sjennings@icdd.com or Tel: 610-325-9814. The application will ask you to upload the required details in the form of two separate PDF documents. The form will also request you to provide the contact information for your primary research advisor. An e-mail will be sent to this advisor seeking a one-page letter of recommendation on your behalf.

Supporting Documents

  • Font Size: 12 points; Margin: no smaller than 3/4 inch.
  • A description of the candidate’s proposed research (limit 2 pages) including:
  • Purpose and rationale for the research
  • The proposed methodology to be used in the study
  • References and/or descriptions of the scientific background for the proposed research
  • A curriculum vitae including:
  • Educational preparation (institutions, dates, degrees obtained and in progress, and particularly pertinent coursework)
  • Awards honors received
  • Any research publications and/or presentations given
  • Any work experience (dates, employers, positions)
  • Professional activities, memberships

Benefits

The 2020 Ludo Frevel Crystallography Scholarship Awards were distributed in the amount of $2,500 each. This grant is initiated to support the education and research program of promising graduate students in crystallography-related fields.  The recipient may make an application for one renewal at the end of the first year.

Application Deadline

The applications for the scholarship program will open on 3 August 2020 and must be received by ICDD no later than 16 October 2020.
