California Middle Class Scholarship Program

The California Middle-Class Scholarship (MCS) is a scheme that offers college students with family earnings up to $177,000 and a combined annual household asset value of $177,000 a scholarship to attend UC or CSU campuses. MCS grants are distributed on a sliding scale depending on family wealth. Scholarship amounts will differ between recipient and school, with the top scholarship equalling 40% of the systemwide – or foundation – tuition and fee total. Applications are open to any individual who is enrolled or will be enrolled into the University of California or CSU during the 2021 academic year. So, if you are a student who is currently enrolled in any course at the university and come from a middle-class family, then this opportunity is just for you!

The California Middle-Class Scholarship, aim, at giving an opportunity to students coming from middle-class families an opportunity to pursue their course of choice at the University of California or California State University. MCS awards will be announced in mid-November 2020, and students will be notified by email to check their MyAwards. This service is reliant on government support. The maximum annual household assets and wages that qualify for the programme are subject to adjustment.

The private College of California, established in 1855 in Oakland, is the university’s forerunner. The University of California was founded in 1868 when the college combined with the Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College (which had been formed as a land-grant institution in 1866) to create the University of California. The university moved to Berkeley in 1873. Many schools eventually became a part of the scheme. The scheme, which has a cumulative population of about 200,000 students, is governed by a 26-member board of regents.

Who May Be Eligible

In order to be qualified for the California Middle-Class Scholarship, the applicants must satisfy the following eligibility criteria. New, transition and returning undergraduate students at the University of California or California State University who meet the following conditions and have an annual family income and household assets of up to $177,000 may be eligible:

  • If you live in California or have AB 540 status,
  • You are not in arrears on the student loans.
  • Continue to make satisfactory academic gains
  • Have a family wealth level of up to $177,000, minus equity in a primary residence and investment assets.
  • By March 2nd, you must submit a FAFSA/California Dream Act application.

How to Apply

Candidates interested in registering for the California Middle-Class Scholarship must fill out online registration forms available at the UC or CSU’s website. Click here to view the online application. The state provides funds for the service each year. The aim of this support for UC students is to include scholarships to cover up to 40% of UC’s systemwide tuition and fees. What this means to you is that:

  • Be sure you fill out a financial assistance application. There are no different applications to fill out to qualify for the Middle-Class Scholarship Program, but keep in mind that you must apply for financial assistance every year by March 2.
  • If you apply for this scholarship and your family’s income and assets are less than $177,000 a year, the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) and your UC campus financial aid office will inform you of your exact scholarship number.
