The Seal of Buchanan County is pleased to inform you that they are launching a Buchanan County Natural Areas Photo Contest sponsored by the Buchanan County Conservation Board and Friends of Fontana Park. The following contest is open to all amateur photographers to participate and win a chance to receive a one-time cash prize of $100. There are four categories given to the contestants to choose and capture their shots accordingly: Landscapes, Wildlife, Plants & Wildflowers, or People Enjoying Nature. Besides the overall winner of $100, a $50 prize will be awarded to the winners in each of the four categories.
The photos to be submitted must be taken in Buchanan County, depict Natural Areas, and be taken by amateur photographers. The photographers do not have to be from Buchanan County to be eligible for the contest. Images submitted will be judged on depicting natural areas with originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact, and artistic merit. Judging will be at 6:30 pm Wednesday, Sept 22 at a public program in the Fontana Interpretive Nature Center Classroom by professional photographer, Kip Ladage. The Conservation Board reserves the right to keep copies of any photo entries and utilize them in promotional materials (credit will be given). BCCB will display the winning photos as 8X10’s on the Nature Center Exhibit floor for one year and then in the classroom area for approximately 10 years.
Buchanan County towns include Independence (the county seat), Quasqueton, Fairbank, Brandon, Jesup, Winthrop, Hazleton, Aurora, Lamont, Stanley, Rowley, as well as, the unincorporated villages of Littleton, Chatham, and Otterville. Buchanan County’s first courthouse sat east of the present courthouse (now the parking lot) on 6th Ave. NE. South of the courthouse is where the county’s fire-proof office building was located and just north of the courthouse sat the sheriff’s residence with the jail directly behind.

Who is Eligible?
Following are the eligibility requirements for the following scholarship contest:
- Amateur photographers are eligible to apply
- Photographers do not have to be from Buchanan County.
- Photos entered in previous years’ contests are not eligible.
How to Apply?
The interested individuals are required to submit the photos following the below-given instructions:
The photos must be taken in Buchanan County, depict Natural Areas.
- Black & white or color images will be accepted. Images may be enlarged and cropped and edited for standard color/exposure/contrast.
- Images must be submitted either electronically (via separate email attachment per each photo entered to scabell@co,buchanan.ia.us) OR by mail to Fontana Nature Center (1883 125th St Hazleton, IA 50641), OR in person at Fontana Park Nature Center.
**Photo ID label MUST include photographer’s name, address, phone, and contest category AS WELL AS the location where the photo was taken. Place label on the back of printed images or in text accompanying email entries. - No more than eight photos per individual may be entered, photos may be entered in any categories. The categories are Landscapes, Wildlife, Plants & Wildflowers, or People Enjoying Nature.
Benefits
All of the applications submitted by you will be reviewed and judged based on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact, and artistic merit by the selection committee, and out of all, the most deserving candidates will be selected as the winners of the following scholarship.
One $100 prize will be awarded to the overall winner, and a $50 prize will be awarded to the winners in each of the four categories. BCCB will display the winning photos as 8X10’s on the Nature Center Exhibit floor for one year and then in the classroom area for approximately 10 years.
