The ASA conducts this fellowship program every year to support and assist students engaged in the study of sociology. The American Sociological Association (ASA) works as a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the discipline and profession of sociology. It was founded in December 1905 as the American Sociological Society at Johns Hopkins University by a group of fifty people, the first president of the association would be Lester Frank Ward. Today, most of its members work in academia, while around 20 per cent work in government, business, or non-profit organizations.

Who May Be Eligible?

Candidates must take a look at the criteria given below before applying:

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a program which grants the Phd in sociology and has completed one year of the program at the time of application.
  • Students must be members of one of the following racial or ethnic groups: Blacks, African Americans, Latinos/as (e.g., Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans), American Indians or Alaskan Natives, and Asians (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Southeast Asian, South Asian), or Pacific Islanders (e.g., Hawaiian, Samoan, Guamanian, Filipino).
  • Applicants must be citizens or non-citizen nationals of the U.S. or have been lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence, or be eligible under DACA.

How to Apply

To apply for the fellowship program, eligible candidates are asked to apply online. The process for applying includes creating a new account or logging into the existing one. The students will be required to submit the complete application packet and the desired documents to get consideration for the award program. Applicants providing incomplete or late applications will not be considered for the fellowship program.

Benefits

The American Sociological Association will be offering an annual stipend for each award (August 1- July 31) is $18,000. There are also limited funds available for travel to the ASA Annual Meeting each August, regional or aligned association meetings in the fall or spring, and professional development training programs and workshops. The funds will help out recipients to [ay for their high-cost expenses more easily.
