ACI Eco Concrete Student Competition

The American Concrete Institute is organizing its Eco Concrete Competition for aspiring students who can become the next generation of civil engineers. To participate, you have to be a high-school or undergraduate student. Make a team of not more than six people with a faculty supervisor to advise. You are allowed to get help from a graduate student to participate in designing the mixtures and running the simplified Life-cycle Assessment. For participation, teams have the mission to develop an innovative concrete mixture, which will have the lowest possible environmental impacts while maintaining or improving the durability performance. To achieve this goal, teams are encouraged to seek out and use local resources of ecofriendly materials such as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs).  The last date to apply is September 1, 2021.

The ecosystem is the most important resource that needs to be conserved. With an aim to spread environmental awareness, ACI is organizing the ECO Concrete Competition. The first winner will get $750, the second winner will get $500, and the third winner will get $250. Additionally, all the winners will receive a certificate of recognition and be recognized on the ACI Website. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase your creativity and innovation skills for the eco-friendly development of the world. Participating in the contest will open up new doors for you and can help you build a strong career in future.

Founded in 1904, headquartered in Farmington Hills, Michigan, USA, with a regional office in Dubai, UAE, and a Resource Center in Southern California, the American Concrete Institute is a leading authority and resource across the world for the development, dissemination, and adoption of its consensus-based standards, technical resources, educational & training programs, certification programs, and proven expertise for individuals and organizations involved in concrete design, construction, and materials, who share a commitment to pursuing the best use of concrete. ACI has more than 100 chapters, 243 student chapters, and 30,000 members spread over 120 countries.

Who is Eligible?

With the objective to contribute to and educate the future generation of civil engineers on the sustainable development of concrete, this student competition is designed to promote environmental performance in concrete mix designs. The eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • Each team must consist of students in high school, technical school, trade school, or undergraduate students at a college or university at the time of the competition.
  • Each team can get help from one graduate student to participate in designing the mixtures and running the simplified life-cycle assessment (LCA).
  • A team should consist of 6 students at most, and one school can register only one team.
  • Each team should have a supervising faculty advisor.

How to Apply?

For participating in the contest, follow the mentioned steps:

After designing their concrete mixture, teams are asked to perform a simplified life-cycle assessment (LCA) and present their results in a written report and a recorded presentation. The format of this report is inspired by an environmental product declaration document, which is favoured by the industry to communicate the environmental footprint of products. Additionally to the report, teams shall prepare the simulation results of their mixtures using the Life 365™ software. This open-source tool has been extensively used by concrete designers and engineers to predict the durability performance of concrete against chloride attacks. In this competition, teams will also have to present a recorded video on their concrete mix designs to the judges, with an emphasis on the environmental aspect considered in their decision.
