Fall Data Challenge for High School and Undergraduate Students

Entries are being accepted for Fall Data Challenge conducted by This is Statistics. Fall Data Challenge is the sixth annual competition of This is Statistics. It is a national contest that allows all contestants to apply their statistical and data visualization skills to examine a relevant and timely topic and exhibit the real-world impact of data. High school and undergraduate students are invited to send their applications for this program. For this year’s contest, the organization has selected a very interesting theme which is “Fight Food Insecurity”. In this year program, entrants will contribute to tackling the increasing challenge of food scarcity and insecurity in the United States.

Food scarcity and insecurity are some of the biggest challenges that our world is facing. According to the US Department of Agriculture, there are around 30 million adults and 12 million children who lack access to proper and healthy food on daily basis and are living in a house where they don’t get enough to consume. Food scarcity is a problem that needs to be addressed and resolved. During this contest, students will get to work in teams to apply their statistical skills to analyze real-world food insecurity data and make recommendations to cut down this critical issue. Entries for this program will be accepted from October 11 through November 7 2021.

This is Statistics is a website established by American Statistical Association. This website is for raising awareness of the amazing careers in the statistics field which is a rapidly growing profession. Through this website, American Statistical Association helps students and their parents to get a better understanding of this field and get familiar with it. It clears all doubts of students regarding this study area and assists them to pave their path to success as statisticians.

High school or undergraduate students may apply for this program.

How to Apply?

Candidates are required a short essay describing the team’s process and presenting its analysis and recommendations via a PowerPoint presentation. A link to the submission form is given on the Fall Data Challenge web page that you can use to send your entry. Benefits

There are three categories: (1) Best Overall Analysis, (2) Best Visualization, and (3) Best Use of External Data. And the award will be given in these three categories.

The perks of this program will incorporate the following:

  • Winning teams will receive a $50 Amazon gift card, complimentary memberships to ASA, and a Fall Data Challenge winners t-shirt, along with bragging rights and a chance to apply statistical skill to an important real-world issue.   
  • Winners also will be promoted to ASA’s membership of leading statisticians and data scientists in academia, industry, business, government, and through ASA’s public education campaign, This is Statistics. Second and third place winners also will be recognized.
