Asian American Studies

Asian American Studies (AAS) offers a unique approach to understanding the historical and current occurrence of Asian ancestors in the United States. In using the name Asian American, the AAS unit recognizes that the term seeks to name a rapidly growing, complex, and bizarre population and that no single Asian American or one community comprises all Asian Americans. Asian Americans include those with ancestral obligations in countries or regions in East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, or the Philippines, among others. AAS incorporates courses that address the artistic, historical, human, political, and social dimensions of Asian Americans and is an appropriate learning curve for students interested in a variety of issues related to Asian Americans, including arts and culture contributions; current social significance; historical experiences; immigration, psychological and policy issues; relationships with other social groups; and the construction of the Asian American concept as it addresses important theoretical and practical issues. Applied and Engineering Physics

Explore fields where basic physics meets science and engineering. The main purpose of this degree program is to enable undergraduate students to obtain degrees that include a key curriculum in physics and engineering discipline. This degree program prepares students for either industrial work or advanced degrees in physics, or engineering. Stanford undergraduates, anyone who is doing a bachelor’s degree, is interested in M. graduates in the field of applied physics and engineering can choose to apply for the coterminal Master of Science program in Applied and Engineering Physics. Economics

The purpose of the Economics graduation program is to acquaint students with the economic aspects of modern society, to acquaint themselves with the techniques of analyzing modern economic problems, and to develop in them, the ability to make judgments in examining social policy. The program introduces students to macro-and microeconomic theory and teaches them to think and write openly about economic and policy issues and to use the basic tools of economic analysis. A large undergraduate degree provides an excellent background for those who plan for government and the private sector as well as for those who are pursuing degrees in technical or economic fields. The department expects graduates of the program to demonstrate the following learning outcomes. These learning outcomes are used to assess students and their departmental degree program. International Relations

The undergraduate program in International Relations is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program that allows students to look at how global, regional, and local factors affect relationships between actors at the international level. The program equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to analyze the decisions and challenges that arise in this field. IR majors pursue a study of global politics, including studies in political science, economics, history, and language, with a focus on issues such as global security, political economy, economic development, and democracy. Linguistics

This commitment to interdisciplinary work can be seen in the profiles of their faculty, whose training and teaching encompass psychology, anthropology, art history, continental philosophy, and analytic philosophy along with their literary expertise. It can also be seen in the variety of programs run by or in conjunction with the Department: a new Program in Literature and Philosophy; the France-Stanford Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies; the French Cultural Studies Workshop; the Philosophical Reading Group; and numerous ad hoc workshops on issues in epistemology and interdisciplinary research. This long tradition of interrogating the relationship between literature and other cultural domains gives French and Italian at Stanford a particularly sharp perspective on the importance of literary studies today. The Department of French and Italian offers students the opportunity to pursue course work at all levels in the languages, cultures, literature, and intellectual histories of the French and Italian traditions. Electrical Engineering

The aim of the Department of Electrical Engineering’s degree program is to increase the open education expected of all Stanford students, to provide a basic understanding of electrical engineering based on physical science, mathematics, computer, and technology, and to provide majors in the department, and engineering foundations. The program develops students’ skills in performing and implementing experimental and communicative projects in the scientific community effectively. Students, in general, need to choose one discipline for doing something. Options include bio-electronics and bio-imaging; circuits and devices; computer hardware; computer software; music; processing signals, communications and controls; and photonics, solid-state and electromagnetics; and power and nature. The program prepares students for jobs in government agencies, the corporate sector, or future studies at graduate or technical schools. Majors must obtain at least a 2.0-grade point (GPA) point in courses taken for the EE depth requirement; all classes should be taken at the grade level. Creative Writing
