SMA is now accepting applications for its Native American STEM Scholarship conducted for the year 2020. The members of a Pueblo or Tribe who are STEM high school grads enrolled at an accredited college/university are invited.
The award is aimed to provide financial help to outstanding scholars in their further higher learning. A reasonable scholarship will be offered through the program to cover any tuition, fees, books or other associated costs.
SMA was started in 1984 as an employee-owned civil engineering, environmental and geomatics consulting firm with over 200 professionals. It has been ranked one of New Mexico’s top workplaces for six years in a row.
Who May Eligible?
To be eligible, the students must be following the eligibility criteria:
- Must be an enrolled member of federally recognized Pueblo, Nation or Tribe in the United States
- Must be a high school graduate who has been accepted by an accredited U.S. college or university
- Must be a full-time college undergrad student enrolled at an accredited college or university
- Must be majoring in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics)
- Must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00
- May not have been placed on disciplinary or academic probation at any time

Supporting Documents
- Copy of Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB)
- Transcripts stating cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher – Unofficial copies are acceptable
- Letter of College or University Admission
- Two letters of reference (at least one from an instructor or advisor, and one from another source, not a family member)
- A one-page, single-spaced essay that answers the questions listed in the essay instructions
- An optional, single-spaced essay describing extra-curricular or community service activities you currently participate in and whether they are related to a STEM field
- Commitment to completing 4 hours of community service per academic year
Benefits
The SMA Native American STEM Scholarship will be distributing a scholarship amount of $1,500 per academic year. The recipient will be able to pursue his/her career goals without any hurdles.
