San Antonio River Authority was formed in 1937 and is currently working as one of the active river authorities out there in Texas. It serves primarily Bexar, Wilson, Karnes and Goliad Counties. It is operated by a 12-member Board of Directors. The authority came into existence when the Texas voters felt the necessity of conserving and developing the water resources of the state and passed a constitutional amendment that allowed the legislature to create special-purpose political subdivisions of the State to serve regional areas.
