The Piping Plovers are shorebirds species that is on edge of extinction in the Great Lakes. Unfortunately, there are currently only about 70 breeding pairs left. This contest will draw the attention of people toward these beautiful and amazing birds that are endangered, and help preserve this species.
In June 2019, a pair of Great Lake Plovers began nesting at the Montrose Public Beach. Nearly extinct, the pair represents one of approximately 70 Great lakes piping plovers. This is a major milestone in their recovery from a low of just 13 pairs in the early 1980s when they were declared federally endangered. Chicago Piping Plovers works to ensure their safety as they are an endangered species and federally protected by Endangered Species Act.
