Who May Be Eligible

Check out these requirements before starting the application process:

  • Applicants must be a graduate of a Dayton Public School including any Dayton conversion or start-up charter high school or a local school with an active Junior Council on World Affairs (JCOWA) program during the current academic year or have received the Pfeife Smith World Affairs Scholarship the previous year. All things equal, preference will be given to students who are active JCOWA participants;
  • Candidates must be graduate in the top quarter of his or her class;
  • Aspirants must be planning to attend the University of Dayton, Wright State University or Sinclair Community College.
  • Candidates should show a strong interest in studying world affairs. Fields of study may include: economics, geography, foreign languages, history, human rights, international banking, international business, international relations, political science, or other related fields;
  • Aspirants must demonstrate financial need.

How to Apply

To apply, students need to go to the online portal of Dayton Council on World Affairs, where they will be asked some questions that need to be answered correctly. Once, they complete this procedure; they will be chosen to enter in this program. Please answer all the questions carefully and make sure that your answers are correct ad complete.

Supporting Documents

Send a completed application form and include the following attachments:

  • An official high school transcript through seven semesters (or in the case of a previous winner, transcripts from their completed college courses)
  • A letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counsellor
  • An essay on a current world problem or event (two to three typed pages, double-spaced)
  • A list of your extra-curricular activities and honours
  • A copy of the letter and summary page from the Student Aid Report (SAR) from the free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Benefits

Dayton Council on World Affairs offers two $2,000 scholarships or one $4,000 scholarship annually. However, selected applicants may have the opportunity to choose to have the scholarship sent to the college or university she/he attends in one payment.
