The League of Mexican American Women (LMAW) was started in 1973 to fill a void of Latina-serving organizations. At the initial stage, the main focus was to support leadership training for Latina women in Fresno in professional areas, which can be education, health, politics, and economic development. They received their 501(c3) non-profit exemption documents. The foundation’s members were women who had many years of experience with other mainstream organizations as volunteers, fundraisers and educators.
