James F. Nelson Merit Scholarship Program

It is not easy to live an everyday life being visually blind. Even if you have the strength to achieve your dreams overcoming all the obstacles, then your will power is worth appreciation. The NFB of Virginia is pleased to announce the launch of its James F. Nelson Merit scholarship program for the academic year 2020-2021. Candidates who are legally blind or have a visual impairment that qualifies them to receive services under IDEA or from a state vocational rehabilitation program are eligible to apply. Applicant should be a resident of or attending a full time the accredited institution of higher education in Virginia to apply.

This program aims to empower these exceptionally able students to complete their dreams and make it possible for them. The scholarship designed to support the students with the will power to complete their education although they cannot see. This program is initiated to help deserving candidates who are dedicated to their dreams. It makes it possible for them to complete their higher education and achieve all their career goals.

The ultimate purpose of the National Federation of the Blind is the complete integration of the blind into a society based on equality. This objective involves the removal of legal, economic, and social barriers; the education of the public to new concepts concerning blindness; and the achievement by all blind people of the right to exercise to the fullest their talents and capabilities. It means the right of the blind to work along with their sighted neighbors in the professions, ordinary callings, skilled trades, and regular occupations. It is estimated that over one million persons in the U.S. are blind, and each year 50,000 more will become blind.

Who May Be Eligible?

If you are interested in this program, then go through the below-given requirements to check your eligibility:

  • Candidates should be legally blind or have a visual impairment that qualifies them to receive services under IDEA or from a state vocational rehabilitation program.
  • Fellows should be residents of or attending a full-time accredited institution of higher education in Virginia.
  • Applicants should plan to pursue a full-time, postsecondary course of study in the 2020-21 academic year.
  • Individuals need to participate in the entire NFB of Virginia virtual state convention and in all scheduled scholarship program activities to be held October 30 to November 1, 2020.

How to Apply

Only the eligible students are welcome to apply for this program through an online application form. All the asked details should be provided through the same form. The foundation will not entertain late or incomplete applications. Letters of Recommendation, the unofficial transcript should be submitted as an attachment in the same form or can also be mailed to Jimmy Morris at jimorris0116@gmail.com. All the supporting materials and the data provided should be legit. Late applications will be rejected.

  • The fully completed application form is required.
  • At least one letter of recommendation from a teacher, professor, counselor, or academic advisor who is familiar to you is needed.
  • An unofficial transcript is required.

Benefits

Up to three scholarships of $1500.00 will be awarded. This program makes it possible for blinds to complete their education without worrying about finances. It provides some financial support and encourages them to complete their higher education and achieve their career goals overcoming all the challenges on their way. It motivates the society to look at the physically challenged people normally as treat them with care.
