Information Warfare Essay Contest 2021

The Naval institute understands and believes that the nation’s competitors and enemies are making their way into our country through the digital battlespace. They are becoming a serious danger for our country. They are using online platforms such as social media, malicious code, disinformation, and cyberattacks to steal confidential information about our country.

To address these critical issues, The naval institute is organizing an information warfare essay contest sponsored by Booz Allen Hamilton for the students to participate and pave the way to receive many amazing awards. The following contest asks you to write a 2500 word essay on the given topic or any other IW topic of your interest. Make sure your essay is original and not published previously elsewhere. The deadline for the following contest is 31, October 2021. The scholarship is open to all active duty, military, reservists, veterans, and civilians.

US Naval Institute, founded in 1873, is an independent forum and a nonprofit organization for those who seek to read, think, speak and write to advance the professional, literary, and scientific understanding of sea power and other critical issues concerning global naval security. The Naval Institute is an independent, nonpartisan professional military association that serves a community of individuals participating in an open forum to discuss key issues concerning sea services. The naval institute works for giving voice to individuals seeking the finest Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

Who is Eligible?

The following contest is open to all contributors: active-duty, military, reservists, veterans, and civilians.

How to Apply?

To participate in the following contest, the interested individuals are required to pen down a 2,500-word essay answering the following questions or any other I.W. topic that interests them:

  • How might the opening salvoes of the next war begin in the information space, and what should be done now to defend against those attacks? How might our adversaries be planning to win without fighting by using I.W.?
  • What specific information warfare technologies (offensive and defensive) should the U.S. military be investing in now?
  • How can the military recruit, educate, train, and retain the information warriors it needs to prevail in the information environment?
  • Are there any recent case studies (that went well or poorly) that can provide lessons to guide strategy, operations, tactics, or acquisition over the next 3 to 5 years?
  • How will electronic warfare and emissions control play a role in the future of naval warfare?

Following instructions need to be kept in mind while submitting your essay:

  • The essay must not exceed the word limit of 2,500, excluding endnotes and sources.
  • Mention the word count of your essay on the title page of the essay.
  • Do not mention the author’s name on the title page or within the essay.
  • Submit your essay in the Word format at www.usni.org/iwessay
  • The essay must be original and not previously published (online or in print) or being considered for publication elsewhere. 

Benefits

The winners will be decided and be given the following awards:

  • First Prize: $5,000
  • Second Prize$2,500
  • Third Prize: $1,500

Following other benefits that will be received by the winners are:

  • The winning essays will be published in Proceedings and on the Naval Institute website.
  •  The first prize winner will appear in the February 2022 Proceedings.
  • The winners will be recognized during the Naval Institute–AFCEA WEST 2022 Conference.

Application Deadline

The deadline for application submission for the following scholarship is September 15, 2021. No applications will be considered after the deadline.
