The A&U has announced Christopher Hewitt Awards. The eighth annual Christopher Hewitt Award is now accepting submissions. The award, which honours excellent contributions to the AIDS pandemic and the realities of people living with or influenced by HIV/AIDS in the genres of prose, verse, drama, and creative nonfiction, is named after A&U’s first literary editor. All interested candidates can apply as there are no specific eligibility requirements. This year’s 2021 competition has been kindly sponsored by America’s AIDS Magazine. Applications are now open for this competition aimed at spreading awareness about AIDS.
The “Christopher Hewitt Awards” is an initiative of the “A&U”. This magazine stresses the importance of letting everyone know the impact AIDS has and aims at eradicating it. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 1.1 million people in the United States were infected with HIV in 2015, with 1 in 7 people, or around 15%, unaware of their infection. HIV/AIDS is also a significant public health problem. In 2017, 36.9 million people were reported to be infected with the infection, with 940,000 people dying from AIDS-related illnesses. Thus this award aims at addressing this issue.
Editor-in-Chief and Publisher David Waggoner founded A&U Magazine in 1991 as Art & Understanding in reaction to the absence of so many of his peers from the artistic world. Waggoner set out to create a platform for the imaginative reactions of people dealing with HIV and AIDS, their parents, their caregiving circles, their families and loved ones, seeing AIDS as a spiritual holocaust. The HIV community’s works can be preserved, written, and archived for all time via the pages of an enticing, shiny, and commercially appealing journal like A&U. David Waggoner of A&U hopes that his devoted team of authors and musicians has contributed to greater awareness and sympathy for the illness. The magazine has recognised the need to archive a variety of other artistic, cultural, and scholarly approaches to the AIDS pandemic over time: diet, recovery, and complementary therapies; cultural commentary; book and film reviews; celebrity interviews; HIV and AIDS groups that are making a difference.
