ACLU Sues Texas School District for Punishing Boys with Long Hair

American Civil Liberties Union documented a lawsuit on Thursday in the interest of seven students in a Texas school district who got punished over what they call a discriminatory strategy requiring young men to wear short hair.

Driving the news: School authorities in the Magnolia Independent School District have punished boys for having long hair, including one 9-year-old understudy who had to serve an in-school suspension for a month and be eliminated from campus, as indicated by the lawsuit.

“We have cautioned the district over and again that its sex-based hair policy abuses the Constitution, yet the district keeps on wrecking students’ lives and denies their right to a public education schooling from discrimination,” Brian Klosterboer, ACLU of Texas staff lawyer, said.

Magnolia Independent School District said the district”is checking the cases brought up in the claim with its legal counsel and looking forward to the opportunity to respond to the Court,” per an assertion.

“The administration and the board are currently in the process of considering guardian complaints on this subject,” said Denise Meyers, a representative for the school district. “Magnolia ISD respects differing perspectives, and we respect the rights of residents to advocate for change” he added.

The claim was documented mutually by the ACLU of Texas and the ACLU Women’s Rights Project.

The claim was documented for the benefit of understudies, who are of ages between 7–17, who likewise assert that administrators apply the policy unevenly, permitting a few individuals from the secondary school football crews to wear long hair, per the ACLU.

The school district’s handbook expresses that hair “be no longer than the bottom of a dress shirt collar, bottom of the ear, and out of the eyes for male students.”

Magnolia Independent School District has defended themselves by saying in August: “This has been supported by the Texas courts and keeps on being used by generally a large portion of the school districts in the province of Texas,” KPRC reports.

“Guardians, students, and members from our community have documented complaints and spoken at Magnolia ISD educational committee gatherings to advise the region to quit rebuffing our children and change the arrangement,” Danielle Miller, the mother of an 11-year-old understudy who wears long hair, said, per the ACLU.

“We won’t be ignored nor disappear unobtrusively while our children are being disciplined simply due to their sexual orientation.” She added.
