Visual Arts Fellowship 2021–22

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is inviting applicants to showcase their artistic work with the help of Visual Arts Fellowship conducted for the year 2021-22. The citizens of the United States who are professional artists, graduate, undergraduate, half-year students are eligible to apply.

The museum is committed to supporting professional artists as well as art and history students who demonstrate exceptional creative ability in their chosen discipline. The grants will help students in accomplishing their higher education and goals.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is an art museum in Richmond, Virginia, in the United States. It was founded in 1936. The museum is owned and fully operated by the Commonwealth of Virginia. At the same time, private donations, endowments, and funds are used for the support of specific programs and all acquisition of artwork, as well as additional general support.

Who May Be Eligible?

Below are the requirements needed to qualify the fellowship programs:

For Professional Artists

  • You must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, as well as a current legal resident of Virginia, and have been so for at least 24 consecutive months before the application deadline.
  • You must continue to be a legal resident of Virginia for the Fellowship period of Aug 2018–May 2019. A legal resident has a valid Virginia driver’s license and pays income taxes in Virginia, or is a registered Virginia voter. Applicants must be able to verify residency upon request.
  • You cannot be a degree-seeking student at the time of the application deadline nor plan to be a degree-seeking student during the Fellowship period of Aug 2018–May 2019.

For Students (Graduate and Undergraduate)

  • You must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, as well as a current legal resident of Virginia, and have been so for at least 12 consecutive months before the application deadline.
  • You must continue to be a legal resident of Virginia for the Fellowship period of Aug 2018–May 2019. A legal resident has a valid Virginia driver’s license and pays income taxes in Virginia, or is a registered Virginia voter.
  • Students paying in-state tuition to an accredited Virginia college, university, or school of the arts qualify as legal residents of Virginia. If you attend an accredited college, university, or school of the arts in Virginia but do not qualify for in-state tuition, you may not apply for a VMFA Fellowship.
  • If you are a legal Virginia resident but attend an accredited college, university, or school of the arts outside of the state full-time, you may still apply. Applicants must be able to verify residency upon request.
  • You must be planning to be enrolled full-time and qualify as a Virginia resident for the entire academic year Aug 2020–May 2021 at an accredited college, university, or school of the arts.
  • Half-year fall semester Fellowship awards (worth $3,000 for graduate students and $2,000 for undergraduate students) may be considered on a case-by-case basis for full-time students in the final year of a degree program.

How to Apply

All the participants need to upload a 200 words maximum artistic statement about the work you are submitting through an online application form. (Art history applicants do not provide an artistic account). The applicant’s name should not appear on the artistic statement.

Professional artists who can demonstrate a history of ongoing collaboration will get to receive the below prizes:

  • Collaborating winners will receive one $8,000 award to divide among themselves.
  • Graduate Students Includes (Individual only) $6,000.
  • Undergraduate Students (Individual only) $4,000.
  • Graduate, Undergraduate Half-year $3,000, $2,000 (Individual only)

Application Deadline

Students, who are interested in applying, must submit their applications by 5 pm, November 6, 2020.
