USDA touches the lives of all Americans each day in different positive ways. The USDA/1980 is a partnership between the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and 1980 Historically Black Land-Grant Universities. The Program grants scholarships to students to attend one of 1890 historically Black Land-Grant Universities. These partnerships with the nineteen 1890 land-grant universities and 35 tribal colleges and universities are among USDA’s efforts to develop the next generation of food and agriculture leaders and build an agriculture workforce more representative of America. The program delivers high-quality agricultural research, education, and extension programs and produces skilled graduates in agricultural sciences. The USDA/1980 National Scholars Program is implemented under the USDA Fellows Experience Program (FEP).
The program provides full tuition, fees, books, laptop computer, printers, and software while on scholarship and workforce training to students pursuing degrees in agriculture or related disciplines. When the student has finished the academic and summer work requirements of the scholarship, USDA may convert the student to a permanent employee without further competition. All USDA/1890 National Scholars must commit to at least one year of service with the USDA for each year of financial assistance provided.
The USDA/1890 National Scholars Program was established in 1992 with a mission and a vision to provide economic opportunity through innovation, helping rural America to thrive, to promote agriculture production that better nourishes Americans as well as preserve Nation’s natural resources.
