The Hertz Graduate Fellowship Award

The ‘Fannie and John Hertz Foundation’ is pleased to announce The Hertz Graduate Fellowship Award. The award is open for students of the applied physical and biological sciences, mathematics, and engineering who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America.

The Hertz Graduate Fellowship Award is based on merit (not need) and consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend. The program will provide $32,000/ 9-month personal stipend, full tuition equivalent, and $5,000 per year additional stipend for Fellows with dependent children.

The Hertz Foundation mission is to provide unique financial and fellowship support to the nation’s most remarkable Ph.D. students in the physical, biological and engineering sciences.

Who May Eligible:

To eligible, the candidates must be following all the eligibility criteria:

  • Eligible applicants for Hertz Fellowships must be students of the applied physical and biological sciences, mathematics, and engineering
  • Citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America, and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency (see our Moral Commitment section)
  • College seniors wishing to pursue the Ph.D. degrPh.D.in any of the fields of particular interest to the Foundation, as well as graduate students already in the process of doing so, may apply.
  • They generally do not award fellowships to students who are already beyond their first year of graduate study except in cases of “exceptional leverage.”

Rules:

  • Only those applications which are complete, with all supporting materials and documents provided (including Reference Reports) by the posted deadline will be assured of full consideration by the Foundation.
  • The Foundation does not support study in pursuit of the M.D. Degree or work in descriptive biology, although it may support the Ph.D. portion of a joint M.D. /Ph.D. study program.
  • Eligible applicants for Hertz Fellowships must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America.

Benefits:

  • Option 1 – Funding from Hertz Foundation only
    • $32,000/ 9-month personal stipend
    • Full tuition equivalent
    • Renewable annually for up to 5 years
    • $5,000/ year additional stipend for Fellows with dependent children
  • Option 2 – Coordination with Other Major Fellowship: Often Hertz awardees are also chosen to receive fellowship support from other sources. Hertz supports acceptance of multiple awards and works with each awardee, on an individual basis, to ensure compliance with all funding agencies.
    • Hertz Period: Full tuition equivalent and $38,000/9-month personal stipend
    • NSF Period: $6,000/ year supplemental stipend from Hertz
    • Renewable for up to 5 years
    • $5,000/ year additional stipend for Fellows with dependent children
    • The Hertz Fellowship award is renewable annually (upon a showing of satisfactory progress toward receipt of the Ph.D. degree) for a total Fellowship tenure of no more than five years.
