Student Weed Contest for Undergraduates and Graduates

North Central Weed Science Society is organizing a Student Weed Contest where all the student undergraduates, graduates or doctoral candidates are welcomed to take part. The Contest will be commenced at North Dakota State University at Fargo, North Dakota on July 29th, 2021. The candidates can take part as individual as well as in teams. The teams’ point will be a sum of the points scored by the individuals in the group. The last day to confirm your participation is June 4, 2021, and by June 27, 2021, the registration formalities and bookings at Holiday Inn, Fargo needs to be done. July 28, 2021, will be the travel day and on July 29, the competition will take place. The contest is divided into four rounds starting from Weed Identification, Herbicide Application Technology, Identification of unknown herbicides and the last round will be Problem solving and recommendation. Different points are allotted to different rounds. The highest scoring candidate will be the winner.

This is a great opportunity for all those students who love to explore. If you are interested in the study of plants, this is for you. Also, the highest-scoring team, as well as the individual, will be rewarded with a Plaque. The second and third position will also be recognized. The contest aims at increasing the visibility of the current and future importance of Weed Science for the agricultural industry. Participating in the contest will provide the candidate with great exposure, valuable experience and recognition for their future career endeavours. North Central Weed Science Society are the professional interested in the study of Weed Science from many perspectives. They have their valuable presence in fifteen US states and once Canadian Province. NCWSS works in different committees such as NCWSS Interest Group Committee, NCWSS Standing Committee, Summer Contest Subcommittee, etc. They organize their student weed contest every year with an aim to increase the visibility on the current and future importance of Weed Science for the agricultural industry.

Who May be Eligible?

All the A.S, B.Sc., M.Sc. and PhD candidates are eligible to take part in the Weed Contest, 2021. The A.S students, including 2-year schools, who will compete as under-graduates and graduates are also eligible. Each team should consist of 3 to 4 members. If a team has 4 members, the top three will be considered for calculation for the final score and if a team has three members, all three will be included. A team may comprise of graduates, undergraduates or mixed. No restriction on the number of teams from one college or university. Candidates may take part as individuals.

How to Apply?

To take part in the contest, the candidates will have to follow the stated steps:

  • Send an e-mail with your intend to participate, including the number of participants to Joe Ikley
  • Register and book Hotels at The Holiday Inn in Fargo latest by June 27, 2021.
  • The contest will be organized in late July 2021 in four major events:
  1. Weed Identification: The purpose is for students to demonstrate students’ ability to identify weeds at all plant life and stages
  2. Herbicide Application Technology: Written-test to assess the students’ ability to do calculations related to herbicide application and related agronomic practices. Team sprayer calibration to evaluate a teams’ ability to calibrate and properly operate a research backpack sprayer
  3. Identification of Unknown Herbicides: The purpose is for students to demonstrate their ability to identify herbicide mechanism of action and active ingredient based on symptomology seen on treated plants and selectivity among different species.
  4. Problem Solving and recommendation

Application Deadline

The last date to file your candidature is June 4, 2021, and complete your registration and hotel reservation formalities is June 27, 2021. All the applications after the due date will not be considered for the contest.
