Most people have a vague idea of what they want to do with their lives. They may know they want to make a difference, but they’re not sure how. Or they may have a specific career in mind but no idea how to get there. If that describes you, don’t worry – you’re not alone.

But what if you could stop and shop for your career? What if you could explore all your options before making a decision? That’s what the Stop and Shop Career Path is all about. It’s a way for you to try out different careers until you find the one that’s perfect for you.

1. What Is the Stop and Shop Career Path?

Stop and Shop Career Path is a program that provides full-time associates with an opportunity to learn new skills to advance in their careers. During this time, employees are given the same great pay and benefits they currently receive while also receiving additional training at no cost to them. Participants can choose any of our “pathway” programs within their store.

2. What Are the Pathways?

Stop and Shop offer various “pathways” that employees can follow. These include:

· Business Management – for those interested in moving into positions of greater responsibility, such as department manager or assistant store manager; and,

· Sales – for those interested in becoming a more integral part of our customers’ shopping experiences, such as cashiers, stock clerks, and baggers.

· Deli – for those interested in developing more specialized product knowledge and entering into food preparation.

Once an employee has completed the required number of hours for their chosen pathway, they must pass a comprehensive exam. Those who successfully pass will receive Business Skill Certification at any pay grade up to and including Assistant Store Manager.

3. How Does it Work?

The Career Pathways Program is made up of two parts:

“On-the-job” training (OJT), which consists of employees learning new skills on the job; and,
Business skill certification.

Employees have up to six months to complete their required on-the-job training hours upon enrollment in the Stop and Shop Career Pathways Program. During this time, they receive full pay from Stop and Shop while working towards their goal of business skill certification.

Once an employee has completed the required number of hours for their chosen pathway, they must pass a comprehensive exam. Those who successfully pass will receive Business Skill Certification at any pay grade up to and including Assistant Store Manager.

4. What Are the Benefits of Being on the Stop and Shop Career Path?

  • Stop and Shops Career Pathways Program is voluntary – employees may leave the program at any time.

5. What Are the Qualifications?

To be eligible for Stop & Shop Career Path program, an associate must…

  • Be a full-time, regular employee.
  • Have completed their six months of service.
  • Be interested in exploring our pathways!
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have a High School Diploma or GED/HSED (a four-year degree is preferred)

6. What if I Want to Try Out More than One Pathway?

Each time you finish the requirements of each phase, an increase in your salary will be made, and you will move up a pay grade on your “career ladder.” This will allow you to move up in salary as you advance through each phase of the program.

– Phase 1 – No increase in salary, no change in the pay grade

– Phase 2 – Increase from Step 4 to Step 5 of pay grade (Step 3 is typically a training step)

– Phase 3 – Increase from Step 5 to Step 6 of pay grade (Step 4 is typically a training step)

– Phase 4 – Increase from Step 6 to Step 7 of pay grade (Step 5 is typically a training step)

– Phase 5 – Increase from Step 7 to the top of pay grade

7. Will I Lose My Current Job if I Participate in a Pathway?

No, not at all. After a participant has completed their training in the “pathway,” they will be able to return to their original department.

8. What Is the Length of Each Phase?

Typically it takes a minimum of six months to complete each phase. For some departments, it may take more time; for others, less time. The department manager determines the length and varies from location to location.

9. How Many Hours Are Required to Complete Each Phase?

Each phase is designed so that it takes about six months to complete. This time frame allows you the opportunity to focus on one new skill at a time, giving you an advantage when advancing into higher phases of the program. However, if you need more time (due to unforeseen circumstances), Stop & Shop will grant you an extension on your “pathway” so you can stay with the program until completion.

10. How Do I Apply?

There is no application process. Stop & Shop employees are encouraged to discuss Career Pathways opportunities with their department managers. So, when the time comes, and you’re ready to start your pathway journey – ask!

12. How Long Does it Take to Get a Raise?

Every six months, you will receive a pay increase by your current phase and the pay grade associated with your position.

13. Will I Be the Only Employee in the Pathway?

Normally, no. Stop & Shop associates who participate in a “pathway” experience will share their training and knowledge with their fellow teammates. The goal of this program is to ensure that they are building a strong workforce for the future!
