The Friend of the Turnbull Library is proud to declare their exciting contest the “Smart Alex Creative-Writing Competition for Secondary School Students”. The contest is open to all students who are currently attending a secondary school in New Zealand or in the Pacific Islands and includes secondary home-educated students.
The competition is divided into two parts one for 9-10 years old students and second for 11-13 years old students. The award will be distributed in two categories- first 9-10 years old winner student will get $500 and second 11-13 years old winner student will receive $1,000.
Who May Eligible:
To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
- Students should enroll in a secondary school in New Zealand or in the Pacific Islands, and includes secondary home-educated students.
- Students must be a citizen of New Zealand or Pacific Islands.
- Age limit for this contest is 9-13
How to Apply & Competitions Rules:

Rules:
- For Years 9-10, the word limit is 250 words, or up to 3 A4 pages if including illustrations.
- For Years 11-13, the word limit is 500 words, or up to 6 A4 pages if including illustrations.
- Entries may be in English or Te Reo Māori.
- All entries must be the original work of the entrant.
- There is a limit of one entry per student.
- The competition commences on 7 March 2018.
- Winners will be contacted through their school, or, if home-schooled, through the contact provided on the entry form.
- All entries must be attached (as a PDF, TXT or Word attachment) to the official entry form, which is on the FoTL website.
- All entries must include the Alexander Turnbull Library reference number of the item you’re writing about.
- All entries (excerpts or in full) may be used by FoTL and the Alexander Turnbull Library for publicity purposes.
- Prize-winning and highly commended entries will be considered for publication online or in print. Copyright will remain with the individual writers.
Benefits:
There are two categories of the prize as the following:
Years 9-10 old winner students will be awarded by
- Winner: $500
- Runner-up: $200
- The winner’s school library also receives a $150 book token.
And years 11-13 old winner students will get
- Winner: $1,000 cash
- Runner-up: $300 cash
- The winner’s school library also receives a $150 book token.
- Students with highly commended entries will receive a certificate.

All applications must be submitted before 22 July 2018.
