PSR High School Essay Contest

The Physicians for Social Responsibility has announced their 2022 essay contest for students studying in high schools in Sacramento and surrounding Northern California counties. The students need to write an essay on the statement stated as ‘Americans cannot teach democracy to the world until they restore their own’ by William Greider in his book.

The contestants selected for the prizes will be judged based on their written essay’s accuracy, originality, clarity, cohesiveness, and overall impact. The first winner will be awarded $3,000, the second with $2,500, the third with $2,000, and the other seven contestants participating in finals will be awarded $1,000. If all ten finalists participate in the final event, the two alternate finalists will both receive $250. If a student who has initially chosen as one of the ten finalists cannot participate in the final event, then alternate finalists take that student’s place; the alternate finalist will get instead $1,000 will automatically get eligible for first, second, and third-place awards. The award amount will help students towards post-high school education-related expenses for up to two years or until the post-high school educational institution of the student’s choice, depending on whichever is longer.

The Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) is a non-profit organization that includes health care professionals and other concerned citizens. The organization works to preserve our environment and universal access to build affordable health care caused by interpersonal violence such as nuclear weapons and militarism, the reduction of firearm-related deaths and injuries, and other forms.

How to Apply?

The participants who want to apply for this contest should fill the application form and enter proper information in each field and must add additional information such as how did the applicant learn about this scholarship and the essay written in a maximum of 500 words. To apply for the contest, students must register themselves on the below link.

Application Form

The selection will be held by the PSR committee and other qualified individuals to read and rate the essays based on accuracy, originality, clarity, cohesiveness, and overall impact. The panel will select ten finalists and two alternate finalists and will be invited for oral finals event where students will present their essay orally, which will be conducted on May 01, 2022, in person or via zoom depending on the Covid-19 situations. Finalists must sign the form and confirm their presence at the event by April 22, 2022. Lastly, the selection committee will select final winners after listening to essays orally.

Benefits

The contestants participating in the contest will be selected in the above manner, and chosen finalists and winners will receive prizes ranging from $250-$3,000. Total awards worth $15,000 will be distributed to different winners and participants. The award amount will be used for students’ education-related expenses or post-high school institutions. The award amount will help students towards post-high school education-related expenses for up to two years or until the post-high school educational institution of the student’s choice, depending on whichever is longer.

The participants who want to apply for this contest and are eligible should get themselves registered and send the entries before the deadline of March 19, 2022. The entries received after this date will be considered ineligible and rejected.
