To empower and help women further their education, the Owatonna Foundation has designed amazing funding programs called June A. and Melanie Nelson Scholarships. These funding schemes are made possible with the help of a generous gift from June A. and Melanie Nelson. These scholarships have been promoting the education and development of women by providing monetary support to them in gaining higher education. Candidates who are women and have an Owatonna mailing address or have worked at an Owatonna business for at least the past two years are encouraged to take part in these funding programs.
The foundation believes that our society needs educated and strong women. Women must be provided with the right education so that they can contribute to the growth of the nation. Unfortunately, it is often observed that many women who belong to the financially disadvantaged background have to limit their studies due to the high cost of tuition, or they are not provided equal opportunities in accessing higher education. Apart from this, the higher cost of education has been a major barrier that prevents talented female students from going to university or acquiring higher education. To curb this situation, Owatonna Foundation has established these beneficial funding programs that will enable women to gain higher education in their chosen field without facing any difficulty.
Owatonna Foundation was founded in December 1957 as one of the first community foundations in the State of Minnesota. Since then, it has been working toward its mission of improving the quality of life for present and future generations of Owatonna residents. Within 55 years of journey, it has disbursed over $11 million in grants and scholarships. It provided its very first grant to the Owatonna Hospital to outfit two rooms and provide incubators for the nursery. Apart from providing grants, it also hosts fundraising events that engage the community and start a group of volunteers.
