Online Journalism Contest for International Students

The Online News Association is organizing the 2021 Online Journalism Awards recognizing excellence in digital reporting. Award categories include data journalism, visual storytelling, investigative journalism, public service, etc. This year’s competition features 3 new categories: Pandemic coverage, social justice reporting, and the Student Journalism Award. All the journalists from across the globe are eligible to participate. The entry fees for ONA members are $100 and for the non-members, it is $150. Similarly, under the students’ category, the ONA member students need to pay an entry fee of $15 and non-member students have to pay $50. The submitted work should have been published between June 1, 2020, to May 31, 2021. The last date to file your participation is June 1, 2020.

This is an excellent opportunity for all the budding as well as professional journalists to showcase their effective journalism skills to the world. Journalism is a sensitive career option with a lot of problems in between. If you are intelligent enough to work effectively in the boundaries and provide the news to the general public, this contest is for you. The Online News Association is a nonprofit membership organization for a digital journalist- connecting journalism, technology, and innovation. It is the world’s largest association. Memberships include journalists, technologists, executives, students, educators, and other digital media professionals. ONA’s mission is to inspire and support innovation and excellence in digital journalism. The Association hosts Online News Association conferences and administers the Online Journalism Awards.

Who May Be Eligible?

To be eligible, the candidates must satisfy the following criteria:

  1. Single entry for student work, the student journalism award divided under two sub-categories: Student Portfolio and Student team Portfolio.
  • Students must be undergraduates/graduates or high school students.
  • The work should be published between June 1, 2020, to May 31, 2021.
  • The published work should be unpaid.
  1. General Eligibility:
  • Open to websites, areas of websites, and all digital platforms including smartphones, e-readers, and tablets, where journalists have originated the content or selected and amplified it.
  • Online retailers and advertising sites are not eligible.

How to Apply?

For participating in the contest, the candidates have to submit their published work online along with the entry fee which is subdivided under the following categories:

  1. ONA members- $100
  2. Non-members- $175
  3. Student Members- $15
  4. Student non-members- $50

The contest offers five awards totaling US$40,000, courtesy of SmartNews, Journalism 360, McKinsey Publications, and many more. This is an opportunity for the budding as well as the professional journalists to showcase their reporting skills to the world and participate in the worldwide competition.

Application Deadline

The last date to file your candidature is June 10, 2021. All the published work from June 1, 2020, to May 31, 2021, can be submitted. Winners will be announced later in 2021.
