Number of Indian Students Rises in Australian Universities to Pursue Higher Education

Australia is the third most popular study destination for international students, after the USA and UK. According to the latest statistics released by the Australian Department of Home Affairs, the number of Indian applicants in Australian universities rose by 32% between July and December 2017.

Australia is the second most preferred international education destination for Indian students across the vocational, higher education and school sectors. Over 600,000 international students are currently studying in Australia.

The number of foreign students who applied for higher education in Australia increased by 14.1 percent between July and December 2017, compared to the same period in 2016.

The number of Indian students studying in Australia is booming and the delegation is looking to boost this number further with many Indian students now shying away from the US – the top choice of Indians for higher education.

India is the second largest source of student enrolments in Australia, contributing $2.5 billion annually to the international education sector. According to the latest statistics released by the Australian Department of Home Affairs, nearly 32% of over 1900,000 international students in Australia were from India.

Report of racist attacks and job squeezing in Australia has failed to find opportunities for Indian and Chinese students to study in a large number of Australian universities.

The number of student visa granted increased by 7%, with more than 90% of applicants being granted student visas. The number of student visas granted to Indian nationals was 20,000, according to the report.

A statement from the Department of Home Affairs announced earlier, “On April 18 2017, the Prime Minister of Australia Malcolm Turnbull and Peter Dutton, Minister for Immigration and Border Protection jointly announced that the Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457 visa) will be abolished and replaced with the completely new Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa which will support businesses in addressing genuine skill shortages”.

According to the Department of Home Affairs, a 457 visa allows a skilled worker travel in Australia so that their approved sponsor can complete their enrolled business for four years.

This new visa is part of the government’s reform package to strengthen the integrity and quality of Australia’s temporary and permanent employer-sponsored skilled migration programs. The implementation of these reforms took place in April 2017 and it will be completed in March 2018, the statement said.

Australian universities such as New South Wales, DeKean, Canberra and Queensland saw an increase in the number of Indian students in 2017, reported SBS.com earlier.  John Molony who is Pro Vice-Chancellor (International), Deakin University said, “There is a growth of approximately 30 percent over same time last year”.
