The clinical and community aspects of being a primary care physician should be presented to the fellows. It is critical that they do it in a manner that is advantageous to clinics. As a result, MedServe has made available six trainable fellow jobs. Based on the highest needs in their practice, each clinic partner selects one clinical and one community position for a fellow to accomplish. Clinical roles aid clinical flow and make clinic staff’s jobs more accessible and more efficient. Each fellow is paired with a great primary care doctor at their clinic who epitomizes the creative, compassionate practitioner that healthcare is said to require. Fellows get a $20,000 yearly stipend as part of the AmeriCorps program.
On behalf of the clinic, the community health worker fellow will get to work with community outreach activities. This might include health education, limited services (such as home checks, pill checks, and vital signs), and clinic information. In a restricted role, a medical assistant fellow assists patients in the emergency room, collect histories and vital signs, and does other skill-appropriate activities. The fellow also will get to help with practice administration tasks, including insurance authorization and follow-up on referrals. The benefits of this program include mentorship from professionals, an annual stipend of $20,000, quarterly check-ins, and bi-weekly check-ins.
The purpose of MedServe is to enhance the health of North Carolina‘s medically disadvantaged communities by exposing tomorrow’s most potential future doctors to primary care in a way that motivates them to be life-long champions of health equality.
