Mary Gates Research Scholarship at the University of Washington

This scholarship is aimed at increasing the academic experience of undergraduate students at the University of Washington. These are one of the best sources of undergraduate research funding available on campus.

The University of Washington is one of the world’s preeminent public universities in the United States. UW provides the support that allows students to explore their developing goals and ideas. They offer students with information and guidance that helps them to identify learning opportunities and with financial flexibility

Who May Eligible

  • Holders must be matriculated UW undergraduate students registered full time (at least 12 credits during the academic year; only one credit is required in summer) during the award period, pursuing a bachelor’s degree at the UW Bothell, Seattle or Tacoma campus.
  • Open to U.S. citizens, international, and undocumented students
  • Students in the planning stages of their research who effectively articulate the plan and the direction of their project will be strong candidates.
  • Once awarded, recipients, must be actively engaged in their research and remain full-time undergraduate students during their award period (except summer quarter—students need only to be enrolled for one credit to receive funds).
  • If you have other scholarships, fellowships, awards or stipends supporting your research project and you are also selected for a Mary Gates Research Scholarship, you may not be eligible to receive the full amount of this award.
  • Students may successfully apply for multiple scholarships – and may receive the honor of being named a Mary Gates Scholar in multiple categories – but can receive funding for only one scholarship in any given quarter.
  • Eligibility for previous Mary Gates Scholarship recipients:
    • Previous Mary Gates Research Scholarship recipients are eligible to apply for a second award; however, reviewers will evaluate these applications using additional criteria.
    • Students who have received the same type of Mary Gates scholarship twice are not eligible to apply for the third award of that scholarship type.
    • Students are eligible for a total (maximum) of three Research and Leadership Scholarships (for example, if you have previously received two Research Scholarships, you would only be eligible to receive one Leadership Scholarship).

How to Apply

  • To apply for a Mary Gates Research Scholarship, students submit all the materials on the website pertaining to the Research Scholarship, particularly the selection criteria.
  • Students may also find the profiles of past Mary Gates scholarship recipients informative. Start your application by using the Application Login on the left panel of the website.

To apply, the following information will be requested during the online application process:

  • Your UWNetID
  • Mailing address
  • Permission to access parts of your student record and application.
  • Project title, description, general dates of involvement, average hours spent per week.
  • Requested award quarters (graduating seniors may request only one quarter; all others must request two quarters).
  • Name and email address for your mentor(s).
  • Letters of recommendation will be requested from each person identified in the application.
  • Essay uploaded as a PDF.
    • Your essay should be a maximum of 1,250 words and a maximum of four pages.  Do not exceed either 1,250 words or four pages.  Essays should be double-spaced, in 12-point font or equivalent size with standard margins.
    • Essay prompt: In your own words, describe your research and what you and your faculty mentor hope to learn from your work.

Benefit: Funded Education is $ 5,000 and is distributed in installments of $ 2,500 in two quarters.

Application Deadline: There are two application cycles per year, with deadlines in October and January.
