1. What Is Macaulay’s Career Path?

The Macaulay Career Path is a program for students interested in computer science, math, and engineering. The program includes the core curriculum, concentration courses, and internship opportunities.

The Core Curriculum consists of mathematics/computer sciences, physics/engineering sciences, humanities/social sciences. Students must take at least one course from each category for an interdisciplinary approach to study.

Special Concentration Courses offer subjects that are not part of the core curriculum but will strengthen skills or provide additional knowledge that relates directly to career goals. These can be taken as electives or may be used as substitutes for courses on the core curriculum if approved by an advisor before taking them.

Internship Opportunities allow students to enhance academic understanding by applying what they have learned in the classroom to real-world work situations. Students may choose from various internships, including paid positions at local companies and research opportunities on campus. Some internships are full-time, while others are part-time or for school credit only.

The Macaulay career path is a joint degree program between Columbia University and the Indian Institute of Technology. The program offers graduate students the opportunity to study for their Masters’s degree in Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) and their Ph.D. degrees in IIT-Delhi, or vice versa. Selected students will be funded to spend an academic year in Delhi or New York completing their studies at either institution.

Macaulay is one of the most selective joint degree programs in India. The acceptance rate for the SIPA (MPA, MSIPA) program 2015-16 was only 0.26%. However, the average GRE score of applicants applying to MPA in SIPA was 170. There have been around 8-9 students admitted to the program in the past few years.

3. Eligibility Criteria for Macaulay

Applicants must have completed a three-year bachelor’s degree from an Indian university or equivalent. If the awarding institution is not among those approved by Macaulay, students can request a formal equivalency letter from their home institution.
Applicants must also have at least one academic reference on file with Macaulay from a Columbia faculty member or administrator at their current institution.
Applicants must be able to study in both India and the United States for three years.
An IELTS score of 7.5 or TOEFL iBT score of 100+ is required for applicants who wish to join SIPA at Columbia University. Students applying to IIT Delhi are not required to submit standardized test scores.
Macaulay is open to students in all science, engineering, and social science disciplines.
Students interested in public policy or international affairs are also encouraged to apply.

4. How to Apply for This Program?

Macaulay admits students to either Columbia University or IIT Delhi. Applicants must indicate which option they are applying for on their application form. Generally, the deadline for applications at each institution is April 1st. Priority is given to students interested in studying for an MPA degree, but students with other interests will also be considered for other degree programs. Indian nationals and Columbia alumni qualify for a scholarship of 5000 USD towards tuition and the IITKGP Board Scholarship, which covers their full tuition fee.

The application process includes:

A 200-300 word essay that explains why you want to pursue this program.
A resume detailing past work experience (if any), leadership roles, honors/awards received.
A copy of your passport.
Four letters of reference. One must be from a Columbia professor or administrator at your current school. Two should come from professors who know you well and can attest to your academic potential. The fourth letter must be from either an employer or another individual who knows you professionally and can address your potential for the program.
GRE score (for international students only).

The essays should specifically focus on why you want to pursue this joint degree. Highlight any unique experiences you may have had in India (e.g., a childhood spent at an IIT) or Columbia (e.g., undergraduate or graduate research, extracurricular activities). A GRE score is required for applicants who wish to join SIPA at Columbia University.
Standardized test scores are not required for students applying to IIT Delhi.
Test scores should be sent directly to Macaulay and not by the applicant’s previous institution.

5. Information About Courses Offered in the Program and Their Descriptions

The MPA program at Columbia University is an excellent opportunity for students to pursue their public affairs and international relations interests. There are three possibilities: the MPA degree, which includes a full year of study abroad; the MPIA degree, which does not include study abroad but has courses on advanced research methods; or the MEPP (Master’s in Environment Public Policy) degree, which focuses more heavily on environmental issues.

Each student must choose one of these programs as their primary field of interest when applying to Macaulay College.

The Course Offerings are Outlined Below.

1) The Master’s Program in Public Administration- This program is designed for those who want to work at government agencies or non-governmental organizations that focus on policy.
2) The Master’s Program in International Affairs- This program is designed for those who want to work at multinational organizations, international agencies, or embassies focusing on implementation, diplomacy, and trade.
3) Master’s in Environmental Public Policy (MEPP)- This program is designed for students interested in environmental issues such as climate change and biodiversity loss.

The Macaulay program is an excellent opportunity for students to pursue their public affairs and international relations interests. The program offers a range of courses that cover various topics in these fields, and students can choose to specialize in a particular area. The MPA program at Columbia is the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. It offers a variety of resources to students, such as high-class size, opportunities for funding, and personal advising. Students also have the option to study abroad during their master’s degree; they encourage students who do not plan on studying abroad and those who want to go abroad for a shorter period (one semester or summer) to consider our one-year MPA program as it allows them to study international public affairs in an international setting without extending the duration of their studies.

What are the admission requirements? The criteria for admission include:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university by July 1st of the year in which you plan to enroll.
A strong background in economics, public policy, or social science (must hold at least an A- average for college coursework if applying directly after undergraduate).
Excellent command of the English language.

7. What Are My Chances of Getting Accepted?

The typical candidates who apply have generally taken four to five courses in the social sciences, have a GPA of 3.5 or higher from an American institution and have at least one semester studying abroad.

Applicants are selected by a committee that considers academic achievement, letters of reference, work experience, admissions essays, and resumes. The program is highly selective; we usually accept about 15 students from a pool of more than 100 qualified applicants.

8. What If I Don’t Speak Fluent English?

According to the school’s website (http://www.macaulay.columbia.edu/), Macaulay requires all students to demonstrate “proficiency in spoken and written English.” Applicants need to have a strong command of the English language and most likely need to provide proof of English proficiency through SAT or TOEFL scores or a letter of recommendation from an academic instructor.

9. What Are the Tuition Fees?

Tuition for the 2014-15 academic year was $5,445 per course; however, there is a separate application fee of $75 and an additional program fee of $16,975 that covers:

Study abroad during the third semester (each country covered by this trip varies).
Study abroad during the fourth semester.
Two trips to Washington, D.C., for seminars at George Washington University.
Internship assistance and career counseling in connection with the school’s internship coordinator in New York City.
Macaulay Honors Forum lectures.

9. What Are My Employment Prospects?

According to Columbia University’s website, “Our graduates find positions in public, private, and nonprofit organizations involved in education, health care, government at all levels, business, the environment, employment, human rights, and many other fields.”
