To engage young professionals who might not otherwise have an opportunity to get to know and build professional networks in Asia, the Henry Luce Foundation has organised the Luce Scholarships program for the academic year 2022-2023.

This programme is specific to U.S. citizens and permanent residents only. Applications from college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals in a variety of fields, with a range of backgrounds and experiences, who have had limited exposure to Asia are eligible to apply. Winners will be selected on the basis of their skills and experience and be awarded stipend, language training and placement.

Henry Luce Foundation has existed for more than 80 years and has invested in knowledge makers and ensured tthe hat their work informs public discussion. The foundation is very committed to public knowledge, meaning disseminating the most important news, ideas, analysis, and criticism to a mass audience. It is positively looking forward to continuing its support of long-time areas of focus and to identifying new opportunities to strengthen public knowledge and understanding.

Who is Eligible?

  • The applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.  
  • The applicants must be graduating seniors, recent graduates, or young professionals under the age of 32 or, no more than three years out from receiving a bachelor’s degree. 
  • The applicants must have majored in Asian Studies.
  • The applicants must have spent 18 weeks or more (since beginning college) in one of the countries where Luce Scholars are placed.

How to Apply?

  • Written Application – Candidates provide biographically and contact information, respond to short answer questions, and write a personal statement and 400-word-max bio. 
  • Request Forms for Two Letters of Recommendation (LOR) – Candidates complete a form for each recommender. Once a form is submitted, an email is triggered to the recommender. Letters must be uploaded separately by the recommenders. LORs can be from academic, professional, or collegial references. They should come from people who know the candidate well and can speak to their skills, abilities, and potential. LORs should be signed on official letterhead whenever possible. 
  • Academic Transcripts – Candidates upload transcripts of all college and graduate work. 
  • A 1-3 Minute Video – Candidates record and upload a 1–3-minute video based on the provided promptly. The video gives program administrators a chance to get to know the candidate beyond the page. 
  • Scholarship applications can then be made on the Luce Foundation portal.


The winning candidates selected by Henry Luce Foundation will be provided this scholarship to cover the expenses of language training, and individualized professional placement in Asia and will also extend necessary stipends.

Application Deadline

The scholarship applications period for the academic year 2023–2024 Luce Scholars competition will open on June 15, 2022. The application pathway will be blocked at 11:59 pm ET, 1st October 2022. Applications cannot be made after the deadline has passed.
