JCU Australia Visualise Your Thesis Competition

Do you love visualizations? James Cook University Australia is pleased to announce the Visualise Your Thesis Competition. It is an exciting new competition that challenges graduate researchers to present their research in a 60 second, eye-catching digital display.

Using a pre-supplied template, entrants are tasked with developing a striking presentation to encapsulate their research projects in short, engaging, digital narratives. The competition is open to candidates who are in earlier stages of research (have not reached confirmation/ before writing up) are welcome to enter the competition.

The winner of the JCU Visualises Your Thesis competition 2018 will go on to compete in the National online showcase hosted by The University of Melbourne in October 2018.

Who May Eligible:

  • Candidates who are in earlier stages of research (have not reached confirmation/ before writing up) are welcome to enter the competition.
  • The Competiton at JCU falls under the banner of “Visualise Your Research” the main difference being that only entries that have used the Visualise Your Thesis template created by the University of Melbourne, can be entered in the Visualise Your Thesis National Showcase.

How to Apply:

To participate, the applicants must submit a short, eye-catching 60-second digital display which encapsulates their thesis (ePoster) to grs@jcu.edu.au

The Challenge: What is the 2nd biggest search engine in the world? Youtube. Why? We love visualizations!

Submission Requirements:

  • Poster in PowerPoint file .pptx format
  • Presentation (excl. bookend slides) displays for no more than 60 seconds
  • Slides set to advance automatically in PowerPoint
  • PowerPoint file size no more than 100 MB
  • No embedded online videos, such as YouTube or Vimeo videos or similar
  • No separate media files: i.e. all media embedded in the PowerPoint file
  • All video and audio starts automatically and loops continuously
  • All video and audio are optimized and compressed
  • First slide and last slide from the template included. the title slide and references slide
  • References included for any resources used to create your entry
  • Acknowledgments included for people, or groups, who helped with your project or entry
  • Citations included for any media used or created, including images, audio and video files
  • Does the use of media, including images, audio and video files, comply with copyright legislation and regulations
  • Text font size no smaller than 14 pt
  • Page Setup in PowerPoint the same as for the template? (i.e. page setup not changed)
  • Required information included on the poster as specified in the template: Introduction, Research Significance, Method, Results, Conclusion
  • Text on the entry proof-read
  • Valid Twitter/Instagram handle and ORCiD included on the title slide

Benefits:

All entries for Visualise Your Thesis will be eligible for Prize Money under the JCU Visualise Your Research Competition which is as follows:

  • HDR Winner – $1,000
  • HDR People’s Choice – $500
  • Open Category – $1,000
  • Open Category People’s Choice – $500
  • The winner of the JCU Visualise Your Thesis competition 2018 will go on to compete in the National online showcase hosted by The University of Melbourne in October 2018.

Application Deadline:

The application will close on July 30, 2018, at 5 pm.
