Jax Student Poetry Contest for Students in 4-12 Grade

Put your writing skills into good use and gain recognization with the help of the Jax Student Poetry Contest organized by Jacksonville Public Library. In celebration of Jacksonville’s upcoming Bicentennial on June 15, 2022, Jacksonville Public Library has come up with this exciting poetry contest giving students out there an opportunity to showcase their writing talent and enhance it at the same time. This program invites youth in grades 4-12 to participate in this poetry contest and possibly win a handsome cash prize. Students residing in Duval County may take part in this program. There are three categories in this program: Grades 4-5; Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12.

The theme for this year’s poetry contest is “Looking back, moving forward.” Take a look back at our history while imagining our bold future”. An original poem, not to exceed one page in length, celebrating Jacksonville’s Bicentennial will be considered. Winners will be selected from each age category and get a certificate and a cash prize. The winners will be notified about their application status before the end of the school year and will be sent an invitation to attend a special celebration event in their honor, to be held during the Summer. Furthermore, a selection of poems will be published by the Jacksonville Public Library and become part of the collection.

With 300,000 sq. ft. Main Library and twenty regional, community, and neighborhood branch libraries, Jacksonville Public Library holds the title of being the extensive library system. They also serve the community’s needs and have a Special Needs Library for Disabled Customers and an active adult literacy program.

Who is Eligible?

This program is open to students in Duval County in the following age categories:

  • Grades 4-5
  • Grades 6-8
  • Grades 9-12

How to Apply?

  • If you have a Google account (such as Gmail), you can submit via this Google Form(link is external)
  • Please do not include the poet’s name in the poem itself. Enter it on the form instead.
  • You can also email entries, with a cover page, to JPLYouthServices@coj.net(link sends e-mail)

Benefits

Winners will be chosen from each age category and receive a certificate and a cash prize:

  • $50 for First Place
  • $25 for Second Place
  • $15 for Third Place
  • Prize Bundle for Judge’s Choice

Students with winning and/or published poems will be notified before the end of the school year and invited to a special celebration event in their honor, to be conducted during the Summer. Additionally, a selection of poems will be published by the Jacksonville Public Library and become part of the collection.

Application Deadline

Poems must be submitted by April 1, 2022. Candidates are encouraged to send their entry on time since late applications are not considered.
