How to Prepare for a Phone Interview

“Interview” this word in itself is a very stressful one. Most of us in our lives have given a lot of interviews, for example- school interviews, college interviews, visa interviews now it’s time for the most important and the most hyped interview of your life “job interview.” Yes, you read that right! “Hyped.” Stressing over an interview is very common, but it’s really not worth the stress if you know the right tricks.

Today, we are talking about a Phone interview. This interview takes place only after you have managed to capture the hiring managers attention, you can say that you have already passed 50% of your test. Your resume, application, cover letter and your expertise has attracted the recruiter and now, he/she wants to know more about you.

Today, to get a job you’re required to go through several interview rounds and one out of which is the “Phone Interview.” This round is one of the most important ones and if you crack this; you can say you’re more than halfway through to get the job.

Let us look at a few tricks, to crack the phone interview:

1. Take it Seriously

  • Consider this interview to be similar to your personal interview. It is equally important.
  • The recruiter, on the other hand, is taking notes of everything that you’re saying, so be careful about your words. Rest well and keep yourself calm before you get on a call for the interview.
  • Prepare yourself mentally to speak the right words at the right time.

2. Remain Focused

  • Make sure you’re not distracted. Find a good spot to sit down and have all your materials nearby for easy access. Don’t lay down. Don’t slouch.
  • Make sure distractions are not going to be an issue.
  • Make sure you’re presenting yourself in the most professional way possible, from the very first “Hello,” all the way to the “Goodbye.”

3. Research Well

  • Odds are you’ve applied to more than one company, and it’s always helpful to know a bit more who you’re talking to, from both a professional and a business standpoint.
  • Tailoring your answers in the best possible way to ensure that not only are you satisfying what the interviewer is asking, you’re positioning yourself to be the best possible candidate for the job.

4. Don’t Try to Dominate the Conversation

  • Yes, this is an interview, which means they’re going to be asking you questions, but it’s also an opportunity to show your potential employer that you’re good at listening too.
  • Talk, but don’t dominate the conversation. Let the interviewer guide the conversation.
  • Answer the questions, but don’t turn it into a one-sided monologue.

5. Send a Thank You Email After the Interview

  • Remember, this stage is about creating first impressions and the fact that you’re doing this all via phone makes the follow up even more critical.
  • Make sure you not only end your phone call on a positive note but follow up in a timely manner with a thoughtful thank you email after your interview.
