The Graduate Society Summer Predissertation Fellowship is a new funding opportunity offered by Harvard Griffin GSAS. It is support outstanding doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences during the early stages of dissertation development.
This merit-based fellowship is designed for summer language study and/or preliminary dissertation research. The award provides a $3,000 stipend and is intended for students in the G1, G2, or G3 year, facilitating progress from the predissertation stage to an early dissertation phase.

Who is Eligible?
Harvard Griffin GSAS doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences, specifically those in the G1, G2, or G3 year, are eligible. Applicants should be in the early stages of dissertation development and have not yet obtained approval for their prospectus. Former recipients of this fellowship are ineligible to reapply.
How to Apply?
Determine the departmental deadline by contacting the department administrator. Complete the application in CARAT by the internal departmental deadline. Submit the following materials:
- Application form with a budget sheet (via CARAT)
- Current CV (not exceeding two pages)
- Current Harvard transcript (unofficial copy from my.harvard)
- Statement of purpose (double-spaced, not exceeding three pages)
- One faculty signature form (signed by the advisor and uploaded directly into CARAT)
Interested students can apply through the CARAT system. Additionally, students are encouraged to explore other funding opportunities, both internal (e.g., Harvard Centers) and external, to enhance their chances of securing additional support for their summer projects.
Benefits
The fellowship provides a $3,000 stipend, which may be used for summer language study and/or preliminary dissertation research. The award is not influenced by financial need and is a fixed sum paid in one lump sum on July 1.
Application Deadline
The internal departmental deadline for applications is determined by each department and should allow sufficient time for completion of the required ranking form. The final submission deadline is March 4, 2024, at noon.
