Fulbright New Zealand General Graduate Awards

The Institute of International Education is delighted to announce the Fulbright New Zealand General Graduate Awards. These Awards are for promising New Zealand graduate students to undertake postgraduate study or research at US institutions in any field.

Fulbright New Zealand Graduate Awards can be used towards a Masters or Ph.D. program, or grantees can participate as a Visiting Student Researcher (VSR). Approximately eight awards are granted annually, valued at up to US$40,000 (plus NZ$4,000 travel funding) for up to one year of study or research in the US.

Who May Eligible:

To eligible, the candidates must be following all the eligibility criteria:

  • Have achieved 480 points, which must include a completed undergraduate degree.
  • Fulbright New Zealand will also accept applications from candidates who were granted direct entry into the second year of a degree program, therefore completing a 480-point degree with 360 points.
  • In exceptional circumstances, Fulbright New Zealand may consider the application of a student with a 360-point degree provided they have both:
    • the strong support of their tertiary institution (from a Dean or member of senior management); and
    • a conditional offer from a US institution
  • Not yet hold a doctoral degree
  • Plan to undertake full-time postgraduate study or research at a US institution for a period of at least six months
  • Are New Zealand citizen
  • And are not a permanent resident or citizen of the US
  • And are not currently living in the US.

How to Apply & Competitions Rules:

To apply for this award, applicants must complete the online application for the Foreign Fulbright Student Program and arrange for all hard copy required documents to be submitted to Fulbright New Zealand.

Rules:

  • You should also plan to sit GMAT or GRE tests as required by the institutions you intend applying to.
  • Ideally, you should sit the tests in time to include results with your applications (note that for paper-based GRE tests this means sitting the tests by October at latest).
  • Post/courier hard copies of Signature Form and Academic Records Form to Fulbright NZ
  • Complete all required/relevant questions in the online application form
  • Complete spelling and grammar check across the entire application
  • Upload PDF scan of transcripts (official or non-official) for all degrees to the online application
  • Upload PDF scan of completed country-specific questions form to the online application
  • Upload PDF scan of Signature Form and Academic Records Form to “Additional Documents” field
  • Applicants must download and refer to the New Zealand-specific application instructions document.

Benefits:

  • Approximately eight awards are granted annually, valued at up to US$40,000 (plus NZ$4,000 travel funding) for up to one year of study or research in the US.
  • Students undertaking multi-year Masters or Ph.D. degrees have the opportunity to apply for additional funding of up to US$30,000 towards their second year of study.
  • A VSR allows grantees to spend between 6-12 months studying or researching a topic or proposed project in the US, usually as part of a degree program within New Zealand.
  • Interviews will be held in Wellington. Fulbright New Zealand will pay the costs of travel to Wellington only for applicants residing in New Zealand.
