First Amendment Freedoms Art & Essay Contest

Anti-Defamation League is inviting applicants for its currently open First Amendment Freedoms Art & Essay Contest. The program is available for the students who are in their 6th – 12th grade and also should be from Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota to get consideration.

The award is conducted to offer applicants an opportunity to think about how the First Amendment affects their daily lives. The scholars who describe the relevant topic the best will be handed over adequate funds to support their further high and quality education.

Anti-Defamation League is known as the world’s leading anti-hate organization. It was founded in 1913 with a mission to protect the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment for all. It is a global leader in exposing extremism, delivering anti-bias education, and fighting hate online and has the ultimate goal to have a world in which no group or individual suffers from bias, discrimination, or hate.

Who May Be Eligible?

To eligible for the program, the candidates must meet up with the eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants must be 6th – 12th-grade students
  • Students must be from  Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota
  • Candidates do not need to be instructed or assisted by an educator to apply.

How to Apply

Eligible students are provided with two ways of submitting their applications. Applicants can either apply through an online application form or can download a pdf form and send their entries by mail to ADL First Amendment Contest c/o ADL Midwest 120 S. LaSalle, Suite 1550 Chicago, IL 60603 with complete application material.

Supporting Documents

  • Students must describe or portray how one of the five freedoms in the First Amendment affects your daily life by using a personal example or experience
  • Essays must be two-page maximum, typed in 12-point font and double-spaced on 8.5’x11′ unlined paper.
  • The artwork should include a one-paragraph description.
  • All entries must be written in the English language.
  • The entrant’s name, school, or city should not appear anywhere in the body of the essay or within the artwork and its one-paragraph description.
  • Art submissions and their descriptions should be submitted as one merged .pdf file. Art submissions without an explanation will be disqualified.

Benefits

The ADL will reward first place winners with a $5,000 scholarship in each grade category. Second Place winners will receive a $1,000 award and also the teacher with the most entries will also receive $1,000.
