Ernie Davis Scholarship Committee is now happily expecting applications for its marvelous Ernie Davis Scholarships. Applicants must seniors attending high school in Chemung County or Corning, NY, and active in academics and athletics. Students are asked either to develop a project to spread the word about Ernie Davis’s legacy or to volunteer for 44 hours while spreading the word.
The purpose of the scholarship is to support the athlete students in doing better in their careers and their passion. A group of local educators and community members familiar with Ernie Davis’s legacy began to raise funds to construct a statue in his honor. The resulting memorial was dedicated in 1988. One year later, the Ernie Davis Memorial Scholarship was established. It continues today with the support of the local community. The main aim of these scholarships is to benefit and teach society about the great work of Ernie Davis.
Ernie Davis (1939 – 1963) was a talented, dedicated athlete and a role model both on and off the field. Born in New Salem, Pennsylvania, in 1939, he moved to Elmira, New York with his mother and stepfather at the age of twelve. Though he starred in basketball, baseball, and football at Elmira Free Academy, Ernie approached every day as a team player. Marty Harrigan (1922 – 2005), Ernie’s high school football coach, was born in Dalton, Massachusetts. A talented athlete in football, baseball, and hockey, he turned to a career in coaching after serving in the Marine Corps in World War II. Marty earned a Purple Heart during the battle of Iwo Jima in the South Pacific.

The benefits of these scholarships are given below:
The Ernie Davis Scholarship – Up to $15,000 throughout the recipient’s attendance at a 4-year college.
– Up to $7,500 throughout the recipient’s attendance at a 2-year college.
The Marty Harrigan Scholarship – Up to $6,000 over the course of the recipient’s attendance at a 4-year college.
– Up to $3,000 throughout the recipient’s attendance at a 2-year college.
