Designed for Business Student Competition

The Society of British and International Design (SBID) is pleased to announce the Designed for Business Student Competition. SBID created this equal opportunity across their membership and industry to bring imagination, collaboration, education and business together to improve, celebrate and create great minds and amazing outcomes.

Students across the creative industries are invited to enter the SBID student competition by submitting their end of year project and propose a Course Leader as Visionary Tutor 2018 with the aim of winning the coveted prizes.

Students in their final year or in the first year of graduating from a full-time bachelor’s degree or are currently studying a master’s degree course are invited to enter. You have a chance to win £30,000. Student’s can also nominate their tutor for a chance to win the Visionary Tutor Award 2018.

Who May Eligible:

To qualify, participants must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree and graduated in 2017 or 2018.

Eligibility for each category:

  • Category 1: Interior Design
    • Only students participating at SBID recognized interior design universities and schools in the UK are eligible to enter the inaugural student competition Designed for Business.
    • Students are required to submit a synopsis and images of their final year coursework project as the submission for Designed for Business.

  • Category 2: Interior Decoration
    • Only students participating at an SBID recognized university or school and on an interior decoration or related course within the UK are eligible to enter the inaugural student competition Designed for Business.
    • Students are required to submit a synopsis and images of their final year coursework project as the submission for Designed for Business.

  • Category 3: Art
    • Any students currently enrolled at a UK university or school on an Art related course is eligible to enter the inaugural student competition Designed for Business.
    • Students are required to submit a synopsis and images of their final year coursework project as the submission for Designed for Business.
  • Category 4: Fashion Design
    • Any students currently enrolled at a UK university or school on a Fashion related course is eligible to enter the inaugural student competition-designed for Business.
    • Students are required to submit a synopsis and images of their final year coursework project as the submission for Designed for Business.
  • Category 5: Product Design
    • Any students currently enrolled at a UK university or school on a Product Design related course is eligible to enter the inaugural student competition Designed for Business.
    • Students are required to submit a synopsis and images of their final year coursework project as the submission for Designed for Business.

How to Apply & Competitions Rules:

To participate, the applicants must submit an application online form through the given link: https://www.sbid.org/education/conditions-of-entry/

Rules:

  • Works must be emailed to competition@sbid.org
  • To complete your entry, you must complete an entry form along with up to 5 images of your final year project to support your submission.
  • Each submission must be the authentic work of the participating entrant.
  • The judges reserve the right to disqualify any entry, where there is doubt as to authenticity.
  • By submitting an entry, the entrant warrants that it is his/her original work and that they and SBID have permission to publish the material in any forum including but not limited to the SBID website.
  • Each entry must be accompanied by visual supporting evidence of the project.
  • Repeat entries will not be accepted. Students are encouraged to submit original works completed within the past year (or previous year if a graduate).
  • The entry form must include the following:
    • The project brief
    • How the brief has been achieved
    • Any challenges experienced and how you overcame these hurdles
    • What, in hindsight, would you have done differently (i.e. more time, improvements, etc.)
  • Application Format:
    • Ext should be in either a PDF or Word document
    • Supporting images should be in a JPG format (at least 300 dpi).
    • File names should include the full name of the entrant; category entered and title of the work e.g. Mary Smith, Interior Design, and A&B Shopping Mall.
  • Each entrant may enter one submission per category; i.e. one of the following media but not limited to:
    • Art – sculpture; drawing; painting; print; collage; other pictorial presentation
    • Fashion – mood board, sketch, 3D or graphics visualizations, completed collection, garments
    • Interior Design – mood board, 3D or graphics visualizations, floor plans
    • Interior Decoration – mood board, 3D or graphics visualizations,
    • Product Design – mood board, 3D or graphics visualizations, product spec
  • Guidelines: The entries must meet the following requirements:
    • Qualities such as originality of expression, individualism, creative use of materials and presentation are among some of the criteria considered.
    • Students must demonstrate individualism, imagination in concept and in the skillful use of materials.
    • Sculptures; paintings; fashion collections etc, should be photographed for assessment. There will be no restrictions on size and/or material used.
    • All works must be properly presented and may be framed, dressed or presented in a raw format, the presentation format does not contribute to the judging criteria.
    • Selected works may be requested to be displayed at the venue during the awards ceremony.

Benefits:

Prizes will be presented to the Overall Winner, five Category Winners, and Visionary Tutors in a ceremony held in on 29th November in London.

  • One Overall Winner receives the cash prize of £30,000.
  • Five Category Winner prizes – each category winner receives £1,000.

Application Deadline:

All entries must be submitted by Friday 31st August 2018 at 1 pm. and the finalists will be announced on Monday 29th October 2018.

The Ceremony and presentation announcements will take place on 29th November 2018.
