Bridging Scholarships for Study Abroad

Applications are now accepted twice a year for Bridging Scholarships which is sponsored by the US-Japan Bridging Foundation. This study program is available for students who will study abroad in Japan in the spring of 2020.

The AATJ is an international, 3 non-profit, non-political organizations of teachers, scholars, and students of the Japanese language, literature, and linguistics. They work to promote the study of the Japanese language at all levels of instruction in the field and to broaden and deepen knowledge and appreciation of Japan and its culture.

Who May Eligible

  • The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan.
  • Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must be enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the United States before and during the time they are studying abroad.
  • Their study in Japan must last for at least 3 months and must earn credit that will transfer to their home campus in the US.

How to Apply

If you prefer to submit a paper application, you can download the application form. Your application materials should be received by that date, whether they are submitted online or in paper form.

Whether submitted electronically on paper, your application should include the following:

  • An application form.
  • A short essay (up to 500 words) introducing yourself, explaining your interest in study in Japan, and outlining what you hope to achieve by participating in a study abroad program.
  • A transcript from your college or university.

Benefit: Bridging Scholarship recipients receive a stipend of $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic year programs).

Application Deadline: Applications for the study program for study in Japan beginning in spring 2020 should be submitted to AATJ by the deadline of October 10, 2019.
