LGBTQ is the abbreviated form to refer to a group of individuals considered non-heterosexual. They include lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. The letter ‘Q’ is identified as queer as it indicates the condition of being perplexed by what we really are inside. Most colleges are now thinking positively as they welcome students of any gender inside the campus as well as being general roommates. Various surveys show that students are feeling cool at schools that are openly supporting the LGBTQ category in their activities. Scholarships are also dedicated for them by organizations where students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender populations. Several forums and strikes had been held up by activists to gain recognition. They have been considered and recognized as individuals with equal rights and privileges.

1. Pride Foundation Scholarship

The Foundation has been at the helping end in providing financial support and community services for LGBTQ+ student leaders across the Northwest. Over $7 million have been included for scholarships to about 2200 and more students from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. The provision of support in the educational sector remains a serious help for students belonging to the LGBTQ+ community as they still seem to face acute challenges in education.  

The scholars identified by the Foundation are leaders in their communities with exceptional targets in life and have the extreme willpower to attain it in any which ways. 2. The Out to Innovate Scholarships

The scholarships are aimed at bringing up the students who belong to the LGBTQ+ community and also are graduates in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) programs. The students are helped to excel in academics and find out the talented students of the LGBTQ+ group and STEM careers. The scholarship includes two positions with a cash prize of $5000 and $2500 for graduate and undergraduate students. There has been an addition to the current scholarship named Amy A. Ross Scholarship in Bioscience. Those applying for the scholarship have to exhibit a dedication to help the LGBTQ+ community.

3. The Audria M. Edwards Scholarship Fund

The scholarship is aimed at collecting funding through donations and fundraisers for the community of LGBTQ. The fund for the scholarship is named after Audria M. Edwards and was established by her children Elwood “Woody” Johnson (aka Lady Elaine Peacock) and Misty Marie Waters. The foundation was helped by the inputs from Maria Peters Lake and Kimberlee Van Patten to Peacock Productions, Inc. The eligible individuals should be pursuing post-secondary, undergraduate education in an accredited institution or program during the approaching school year. They should also be included under the category of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, Queer or Intersex, or child of an LGBTQI parent. The students should also be a resident of the State of Oregon or in Clark, Cowlitz, Skamania, or Wahkiakum Counties in Washington for at least a year.

4. Follansbee-Hansen Scholarships

The scholarship was named after The Rev. and Mrs. Merrill Follansbee and Jean Hansen, who had been the co-founders of The Sacramento Chapter and were proud parents of LGBTQ+ children. The scholarship has been dedicated to the children of the Sacramento area. The students who are applying should be currently enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education, including vocational and technical schools. They should be identified as members of the LGBTQ+ community and should be ready to serve along with them. They should maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5. 5. The GVSU Faculty-Staff LGBT Scholarship

The scholarship is dedicated solely to the LGBT category of individuals and has been created by the effort from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) faculty and staff at Grand Valley State University along with certain supporting populace to bring up the LGBT students. Every application should be directed through the office corresponding to the financial aid office. Support provided in monetary seems inevitable for students who are positive in their attitude and are ready to get involved in any issues related to the LGBT community. Their aim is to bring the LGBT individuals to the front forum and tune up the service and activism to a wider community. A minimum of 2.0 GPA is required to apply. The students have to be either pursuing their graduation or under graduation and be enrolled full-time or part-time. The students should be showing a genuine need for financial requirements and progressing in academics.

6. NWSA Lesbian Caucus Award

The purpose of the award mediated by the National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA) is to recognize the individuals presenting their master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation research project in Lesbian, Queer, and LGBT Studies. This coincides with the mission of NWSA. The award promotes the intellectual progress of promising scholars who hold their positions in significant theoretical discussions and analyses about feminist matters concerning women and girls of color in the United States. A woman who is presently a graduate student and a member of NWSA would be considered for the award. The persons from the following descents like African, Asian (including Asian American, Pacific Islander, Arab or Middle East Asian), Latin American, or American Indian (including African Native American or Alaskan Native) are identified by the Caucus.

The winner’s essay would be considered for publication by Frontiers.  So they should address the conference theme of 2021, and the topic should be suitable for the publication in Frontiers.

7. Out to Innovate Scholarship for LGBTQIA+ Students in STEM

The LBGTQIA+ students in STEM who are intended at doing their under graduation and graduation in any of the subjects including science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) programs are aimed through the scholarship. They need to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or energetic supporters of the LGBTQ+ community. The scholarship aims at encouraging the students to come up academically and to improve the visibility of the LGBTQ+ students in STEM careers who are talented and brilliant. The applicants have to complete two years of post-high school education at an accredited college or university with a GPA of 3.0. They should also be declared in a major in a recognized STEM or STEM-related teaching field.

8. The David Womack Memorial West Virginia LGBT Scholarship

The scholarship is in honor of David, who had been a constant inspiration through his life and his dedication towards the causes of justice and equity to make the world an improvised place to be. An undergraduate student residing in West Virginia who is gay or lesbian is offered by the David Womack Memorial West Virginia LGBT. The student needs to be attending any institute of higher learning in the United States. They have to present an essay with not more than three pages along with background, educational history and the dreams and targets for the future, and the reason why they should receive the scholarship. The Foundation is giving away three scholarships separately every year to needy individuals.

9. The Walter M. Decker Point Scholarship

The scholarship was created to honor Walter M. Decker, who had been a philanthropist and an academician, in order to support the students who are outstanding in their performance every year.  Those applying should be enrolled or planning to join an accredited college or university in the U.S. and, to a minimum, have to be in their senior year in high school. They need to be members of the LGBTQ community. The undergraduates and graduates who are academically standing and have been marginalized on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression are considered for the scholarship by the Foundation. The application has to be complete and should meet all the eligibility criteria in order to be considered for selection, and that meets with the academics, interests, field of study, and financial need.

10. Traub-Dicker Rainbow Scholarship

Peggy Traub and Phyllis Dicker established The Traub-Dicker Rainbow Scholarship in order to foster and prop up the women who are considered as lesbian and are in their higher order of education. The amount may vary, and the scholarships are provided for a year that are women graduating high school or already enrolled in college in any year of study, including graduate school. The amount of the scholarship is paid straight to the recipient’s school and is taken into account by the tuition.  The applications are judged based on the achievements received; the services are done for the community, and the obligation to be part of LGBTQ issues.
