The North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association is introducing its precious 2020 APA-NC Diversity scholarships. Eligible applicants must be BIPOC students seeking to work in the planning profession and have a student membership to the NC-APA. Applicants must show intent to work and a practicing professional planner in the non-profit, public, or prove sector in the State of North Carolina.
The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-NC) strives to address Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Planning profession as well as in their planning practices. The purpose of the APA-NC Diversity Scholarship program is to foster increased interest in the study of urban planning within the black, indigenous, or person of color (BIPOC) student population at the undergraduate and graduate levels. It encourages the students to do better in their respective fields.
APA-NC is an association of 1,400 professional and citizen planners working to preserve and create great places throughout North Carolina. Programs like Great Places and Plant Kids are an invaluable aspect of the work that APA-NC does for North Carolina. These programs provide opportunities for professional planners to give back to their communities, educate the public on the importance of planning, and involve citizens in the conversation about the future of their community. APA-NC Programs benefit communities throughout NC in a multitude of ways.

Who May Be Eligible?
To be eligible for this program, candidates need to follow the below-given requirements:
- Eligible applicants must be BIPOC students seeking to work in the planning profession and have a student membership to the NC-APA.
- Applicants must intend to work as a practicing professional planner in the non-profit, public, or private sector in the State of North Carolina.
- The fellow should be currently enrolled in Undergraduate students in a planning program in the State of North Carolina or Masters students in a planning program in the State of North Carolina.
How to Apply
Only the eligible students are welcome to apply for the program. Fellows need to submit the required materials through the submittable website. Candidates should first sign in using their credentials if they do not have an account they can create one by signing up. All the materials should be provided with concern. The association will not consider late or incomplete documents. Fellows are responsible for the originality of the materials provided.
Supporting Documents
- 1 to 2-page personal and background statement written by the student, describing their interest in a career in planning and describing what impact the student wants to make in the planning field related to marginalized communities/ populations or the planning profession should be provided.
- One letter of recommendation from a professor, a community leader, or current/ past employer in support of the student’s application and personal background statement is mandatory.
- A transcript of the current course of study (for current students) or a copy of an acceptance letter from a graduate planning school (for incoming students) is needed.
- The fellow should submit the resume of work experience and background.
Benefits
Three students will be selected to award the amount of $1000. This amount should be utilized to pay Tuition, fees, books, or academic materials required to complete the education of the student. Candidates are motivated to do better in their careers with the help of this scholarship. It encourages them to contribute to the state with their higher education and work hard to achieve all their career goals.
