The Playwrights Project has announced the 37th Annual California Young Playwrights Contest A platform every budding playwright dreams of. Applications are now open for this exciting competition attracting talents from across the world. So, if you are a 19 year or older individual wishing to write plays and aspiring to become the best playwright, then here is an opportunity to put your play in the spotlight!

The “37th AnnualCalifornia Young Playwrights Contest” is an initiative encouraging new and upcoming talents to showcase their capabilities. It is important to understand the importance of a good playwright. A playwright is a person who is in charge of writing dramatic material for a theatrical production. The script serves as the blueprint for putting on a dramatic performance. A playscript serves as a road map for putting together a good and full theatrical production. Thus the organization hopes to encourage them through this venture.

Playwrights Project’s mission is to use theatre to inspire people of all ages and cultures to tell their stories, encouraging personal development and building positive cultural ties. Playwrights Project’s mission is to foster an inclusive, caring culture that uses the power of imagination and theatre to open minds. Every year, Playwrights Project services target 10,000 participants in San Diego schools and underserved neighbourhoods of all genders, including those who have endured hunger, homelessness, foster care, immigration, drug use disorder, the justice system, or the military.

Who May Be Eligible

Californians who are at least 19 years old as of June 1, 2021, are only eligible to apply. There are no other eligibility requirements for this competition.

Supporting Documents

You will be required to submit a copy of your script to Playwrights Project, 3675 Ruffin Rd., Ste 330, San Diego, CA 92123-1870.

It should satisfy the following conditions:

  • Only unpublished original scripts should be included.
  • You choose the subject, design, and format.
  • The length must be at least ten typed pages in play format. There is no maximum number of pages.
  • Previously submitted scripts are only eligible if they have undergone major revisions in response to the judges’ feedback.

Benefits

Professionals will assess your submission, and if you are one of the champions, your play will be staged. If you win, be prepared to rewrite your script with the guidance of a competent dramaturg (or writing mentor), producer, and performers, as this is an educational curriculum based on the production of new scripts. So you winning will kickstart your career as a playwriter.
