The National Latin Scholarships

The National Latin Exam (NLE) has announced its five scholarship programs for students who are enrolled at a different level, such as high school seniors, college students, or students enrolled in a master’s program, teachers, college seniors, or other seniors who are seeking a graduate degree. All five scholarships are declared as, The Maureen O’Donnell Scholarship for Academic Excellence and is a renewal application, The Linda S. Montross New Latin Educators Scholarship, The Jane Harriman Hall Professional Development Scholarships, The Christine Fernald Sleeper Educational Travel award, and The Sally R. Davis Graduate School Scholarship.

The first scholarship, i.e., Maureen O’Donnell awards 16 scholarships of $2,000 annually, The Linda scholarships awards ten scholars amount of $2000, The Jane scholarship awards teachers amount to support their ability to teach Latin, The Christine Fernald offers one scholarship up to $5,000 to cover expenses for an educational travel program of his or her choosing, and The Sally Davis offers one scholarship of $2000 to continue their post-graduate study leading to the teaching of Latin and/or Greek at the elementary, intermediate, or high school level. All these programs are to help students in pursuing their education and manage their related expenses.

The National Latin Exam was established in the year 1977 and is a test given to Latin Students which works to provide students with a national standard to measure their academic success. Its mission is to promote and support the learning and teaching of the Latin language. These programs are organized to achieve their mission.

Who Is Eligible?

The Maureen O’Donnell scholarship:

  • High school seniors

The Linda S. Montross New Latin Educators Scholarship:

  • High school seniors, college students, or students enrolled in a master’s degree program

The Jane Harriman Hall Professional Development Scholarship:

  • Applicant must be a current teacher of Latin at the pre-K-12 level in a public or private school who spend at least 50% of their educational time with students

The Christine Fernald Sleeper Educational Travel Award:

  • Applicant must be a current full time teachers of Latin with at least three years of experience at the middle school/high school/community college/college level who offer the NLE to their students

The Sally R. Davis Graduate School Scholarship:

  • Students who are under post-graduate studies that leads to the teaching of Latin and/or Greek at the elementary, intermediate, or high school level.
  • Applicant must be a college senior or other professional who are seeking a graduate degree

How to Apply?

Students applying for The Maureen O’Donnell scholarship should submit their application for renewing their scholarship and with this, they must attach an official transcript with their 2020-2021 grades and coursework. Applications for this scholarship can be sent here.

Students applying for The Linda S. Montross New Latin Educators Scholarship should fill out their application by proving all the details asked here. In this application, students must upload a letter of recommendation, a reference letter, and should ask their registrar or school counselor to send the required electronic copy of their transcript.

Students applying for The Jane Harriman Hall Professional Development Scholarship should read the details of this scholarship and download the application form from here, and those Students applying for The Christine Fernald Sleeper Educational Travel Award should read the program details and download the application form from here.

Students applying for The Sally R. Davis Graduate School Scholarship should download the word file from here, and complete their application form, with this must write an essay describing how they and their profession will benefit from this additional study and attach to the application, and should also attach a one-page TYPED resume and the two TYPED one-page current recommendations. The Linda S. Montross New Latin Educators Scholarship, The Jane Harriman Hall Professional Development Scholarship, and The Christine Fernald Sleeper Educational Travel Award applicants should submit their applications before February 15, 2022.

The Sally R. Davis Graduate School Scholarship applicants should submit their applications before April 16, 2022.
