NFL 1st and Future Competition

The NFL 1st and Future is a skills-based competition presented by Arrow Electronics and hosted at Georgia Institute of Technology. The competition is open to residents of the United States and worldwide who are at least 18 years old or the age of majority in such individual’s jurisdiction of residence.

The 4th annual NFL 1st and Future competition designed to spur innovation in player health, safety, and performance. The competition will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, the day before Super Bowl LIII.

Who May Eligible:

To eligible, the candidates must be following all the eligibility criteria:

  • The maximum team size is 5.
  • Competitions are open to residents of the United States and worldwide, except if you are a resident of Crimea, Cuba, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Sudan, or are subject to U.S. export controls or sanctions, then you may not enter the competition.
  • Other local rules and regulations may apply to you, so please check your local laws to ensure that you are eligible to participate in skills-based competitions.
  • The Competition Sponsor reserves the right to award alternative prizes where needed to comply with local laws.
  • To be eligible to enter the Competition, each Participating Person entering the Competition must be:
  • A legal resident of the country in which he or she resides,
  • At least 18 years old or the age of majority in such individual’s jurisdiction of residence,
  • Not a resident of Crimea, Cuba, Iran, Syria, North Korea, or Sudan, and
  • Not a person or representative of an entity under U.S. export controls or sanctions, see https://www.treasury.gov/resource-center/sanctions/Programs/Pages/Programs.aspx
  • All applicable United States federal, state, provincial and local laws and regulations apply. 

How to Apply & Competitions Rules:

This year’s event will feature two categories of competition as NFL Punt Analytics Competition and Innovations to Advance Athlete Health and Safety Competition.

A valid submission will include:

  • Summary Slides: A summary of the proposed rule change presented in slide format and delivered as either a PDF or PPT file.
  • Kernels Analysis: At least one kernel containing the analysis to support your proposal. All kernels submitted must be made public on or before the submission deadline to be eligible. If submitting as a team, all team members must be listed as collaborators on all kernels submitted.

Applicable only to the Data Science Theme:

  • Data Science Theme entries may be submitted at https://www.kaggle.com/c/NFL-Punt-Analytics-Competition (the entry, along with all other materials provided, the Data Science Entry; any DataScience Entry or Pitch-Off Entry may herein be referred to as an “Entry).
  • Each Data Science Entry must follow the instructions, including the manner, format and other requirements, for developing and entering the submission.
  • The Data Science Theme is administered and hosted on behalf of the Sponsors by the NFL and Kaggle Inc. (Kaggle the Administrator with respect to the Data Science Theme).

Benefits: 

NFL Punt Analytics Competition:

Up to four of the best submissions will be awarded $20,000 each (Up to $80,000 in total prizes). The specific prize breakdown is as follows:

  • $20,000 to each of the top four teams (First Prize: $20,000, Second Prize: $20,000, Third Prize: $20,000, and Fourth Prize:$20,000)
  • Invitation to present at the Pitch-Off event onFebruary 2nd.
  • Additionally, the winning teams will be invited to present their submissions at NFL 1st & Future the day before Super BowlLIII in Atlanta, GA, and the top two presenting teams will each be awarded two Super Bowl LIII tickets.

Innovations to Advance Athlete Health and Safety Competition:

Up to five start-ups will be selected as finalists and will have the chance to present their innovations on stage in Atlanta.

  • One grand prize winner will be awarded $50,000 and two tickets to Super Bowl LIII.
  • The second-place winner will receive $20,000 and two tickets to Super Bowl LIII.
