NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing

The NCWIT Aspirations in Computing is offering their multi-tiered Award structure for young women and non-binary students with aspirations and achievements in computing and information technology. The structure includes Winner, Honorable Mention, Rising Star, and Certificate of Distinction designations at National and Regional Affiliate levels. The students who are good in academics and have good aptitude skills in technology and computing are invited. The award honours high school students who self-identify as women, genderqueer, or non-binary for their computing-related achievements and interests and have plans for post-secondary education.

Motive The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing is to encourage students to pursue their passions. The award provides equal opportunity to everyone. The award’s purpose is to spread awareness about gender equality and has a mission to correct the imbalance of gender diversity in technology and computing. This award will empower change leaders to recruit, retain, and advance women in computing. This award also supports women, genderqueer, and non-binary people with financial assistance.

The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) is a 501 nonprofit organization that works to increase the meaningful participation of girls and women in computing. NCWIT was founded in 2004 by Lucinda Sanders, Dr Telle Whitney, and Dr Robert Schnabel. NCWIT is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado at the University of Colorado Boulder. Bank of America, Microsoft, and the Motorola Solutions Foundation are sponsoring the NCWIT Award for AiC.

Who May be Eligible?

Applicants interested in applying for the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing must fulfil the eligibility criteria-

  • Applicants who self-identify in grades 9 through 12 as women, gender-queer, or non-binary are welcome to apply.
  • Applicants are 13 years of age or older at the time of account creation.
  • Applicants attend a school in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, or on a U.S. overseas military base.
  • Applicants are not an NCWIT employee and have no immediate family relationship with employees, extended staff, contractors, or board members of NCWIT
  • Applicants desiring to be considered for the national award must fulfil additional eligibility requirements-
  • They are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or individual who meets the requirements of the significant presence exam.
  • They have a U.S. Tax Identification or Social Security Number.

How to Apply?

To apply for the award, the applicant must firsts create or update an account on aspirations.org account from here. The applicants must fill in all the asked essential details while creating the account. Applicants must complete their aspirations.org profile and upload documents of parent/guardian approval. Applicants must have a potential endorser. The applicant then must create a new application and apply. Then applicant should click on apply now to register online and submit the application.

Rules

  • Applicants can reapply annually, but winners of the National Award are not eligible to win again.
  • Regional Affiliate Award programs allow repeat recipients, at their discretion.
  • National Award winners are expected to request additional documents, including details on a notarized travel waiver and tax ID.

Benefits

The beneficiary of this award will be able to make use of the various opportunities. The award encourages high school-aged women to pursue their interests in technology careers. This award will provide financial assistance to the recipients. The recipients will be able to pay for their post-secondary education.
